Quick question about farms.
« on: April 23, 2009, 05:02:59 pm »

First time poster, though I've lurked around ever since I discovered the addiction that is DF. Generally I haven't had any real problems, and even this issue isn't all that major, considering my fortress is sitting on tons of food already, but...

My farms are currently sitting full of crops, but my dwarves refuse to pick them up. They wander over, look at them, then stupidly turn away to do something else. They have no qualms with cleaning them out after they've rotted, but they don't want to actually haul the crop to the stockpiles. I haven't changed anything that would make them stop, there's room in the piles, but I can't figure out why they won't move the stuff. Any ideas? I'm digging out space for another stockpile, just to see if a 'new' stockpile gives them any motivation to move it, but I've had some odd stockpile issues on this fortress and am just stuck scratching my head. (Like, my furniture pile seems to always 'need' six bins in it, and dwarves will actually bring things to the bins in the furniture storage rather than place the storage bin in the proper stockpile those items belong in.)

you need empty barrels. or at least a larger food stockpile. and just in case check you orders menue to see if its listed as all dwarfs harvest. that should do the trick.

I'll try making some barrels, but they've never needed the barrels before to haul the crops. I added about fifty spaces or so to the foodpile, and all dwarves are set to harvest, but my whole month's crop is sitting going to waste.

Again, it's no big issue, I just want to make sure it's a temporary thing.

They also don't seem to have any problems picking the food up out of the farms and eating it, just hauling it to the stockpile. It's... just weird. =/

Check the f on that list, is it set to "Dwarves Gather Food" Or "Dwarves Ignore Food"?

It's set to gather. Like I said, I haven't changed any of the more obvious options. The only thing I did change was setting only soldiers to go outside, as I just got done with a goblin siege, but I set that back afterward. I do notice that the farms are now all red-texted, ie too late in the season to plant, but I haven't noticed that ever affecting my harvesting prior.

Are these inside or outside farms?

<Digging deep for explanations...>

Possibly the problem is in the stockpiles???  Could you have mis-labeled those? Use <q,s> to double check that they accept the proper plants that you want to harvest.

Or access - if somehow the path to the farm plots has been broken.

Both. They have refused to harvest from either set of farms, but have no problems picking the food up and eating it.
I notice that there are perhaps four at most dwarves that will pop up with the 'harvest plants' job, but upon reaching the plant, do nothing, give me the blue question mark, then wander off to do something else.

The stockpiles are fine as far as I can tell. They were using them all just fine prior to this last siege, and I just constructed another one just to make sure they had ample room. There are no closed paths between the farms and the stockpiles at the moment.

If it continues on into next season, I'll start to worry, but if it's just a bit of a glitch after a siege and returning dwarves to their normal work schedules and the 'too late in season' is somehow affected their ability to harvest, I've got about 16k+ in foodstuffs, so I'm not particularly worried.

Edit: Maximum food limit could be it, what's the default limits? I haven't messed with anything init wise.

200. I think. No messing with it either, I think it is hard coded.

200 non-barreled foodstuffs? That could very well be the issue, as I have to constantly churn out barrels to keep up with food production, and on a map with no lumber, and only sparse amounts of copper and nickel, there is usually plenty of food sitting around in the bins.
