Armok 0.04.50
« on: August 26, 2004, 05:41:00 am »

You Finally Aren't Naked

Well, once you hunt something that is.  And navigate the wear screen, a game in and of itself.

This release is lackluster in any way you might imagine, but there have been a ton of architectural changes that should support the Quaint Thorpe release (which is scheduled next!  eek!).

Anyway, I wasn't able to get it to flat-out crash recently.  Let me know if you do, and I'll try to fix it.  The editors don't count.  They are enabled again, but I'd only using them for minor tweaking unless you know what you are doing.  The chances of that are very small, since nobody knows how to use them, including me.  The editors also allow for many options that are simply not implemented.  This is especially true of the new item editors.

Note:  Zonk made a dark elf that works with this version (after I tweaked the form node variables in the body part defs -- clothing caused a bit of a crash there).  You can check it out HERE.

I've updated all of the relevant Armok pages (moved up the plan, posted the log, updated the current plan, updated the clean up list, posted the news, etc.).

Woho! Wow, it's been a long time since I played any armok. Just tried to shoot a naked mole dog, and completely forgot the controls. Help was exactly as useful as expected too. Some day I'll sit you down and make you write a manual.  :)
But great stuff, and for all your crash warnings, as stable as a roxors.

Finally the next step   :)
But one question:
How to make clothes out of animal corpses?

I thought that would be possible now.

Holy Macarony! I think that "hey, my guy needs some clothes made out of bark" so I use a detonation spell on a tree... it says I shine or something, then everything freezes and I think "oh... it crashed" 5 seconds later it says "Doesn't respond" at the top of the window, 3 secs later about 20 Zillion various treeparts fly in every direction almost drowning my poor guy whom is now severly bruised from the rain of toothpicks. Very Nice!!!

Well that guy and the next three guy died! Horribly! I misaimed detonation spells and they kinda suffered instadeath... Well, you know what they say, if the first three doesn't work, try a fourth!

Damn! Who would've thought that bark shortswords are so deadly. I love the way weapon parts are colored based upon the base material coloration. I even went through trouble of finding two different colored trees so I could have a white bark bladed shortsword with a brown bark hilt.

I found an interesting bug/feature. My character casted the regeneration spell, but died before the spell took effect. I got the game over skulls, then I heard the regeneration "noise" and all my characters injuries healed but he was still dead. I guess that once a soul leaves it will never come back.

Xlurker, sorry for not documenting the game.  I am lazy.  Here is how it works:  move on top of the corpse and press 'G'.  You need something sharp, but your starting arrow will do.  Select the arrow on the top right, and then select the corpse on the top left.  Click on it until you get to the parts -- when you select a part, a "butcher" option should appear below.  Butcher the rabbit, and there should be skin lying around (it might be vastly oversized -- butcher is a bit buggy).  There also might be skin or hair from the fight, in which case you don't need to do this.

Now, from the 'G' screen, if the rabbit skin is on the left-hand list, press the anvil on the top right.  That will take you to the item making screen.  Select the item and shape you want, then select the rabbit skin when it appears.  Add it to all of the components (or mix and match a la Captain Action!), then press "make it" (NOT "done") and you should immediately have your item on the ground.  Pick it up, and go to the inventory screen to put it on.

ASD, he he, sorry about the scare.  It makes a different projectile for every little twig -- realistic maybe (except for how big and blocky they are), but it calls a complicated sever function for each one, which is stupid of me and causes the massive lag.

CA, nice sword!  It will be the combat release where damage is actually sorted out piece by piece until it makes more sense...

Yeah, the body you see there is actually an item -- not even an official creature any more.  It would take an (unimplemented) resurrect spell to turn the item back into a creature with a soul structure in the soul array :)  Right now, rather than leaving, it actually *deletes* the souls of dead creatures.  Once the res. type mechanics are in, I suppose the world will have flags that say if/where souls depart and if you can get them back.  They could even turn into little marbles by the body that you can pitch at rabbits and bears.

Soul Bullets for Slingshots... hey Maybe dragon souls go into catapults instead :P

Fire a Black Dragon soul and you get something like an impact acid splash bomb or sumthing :P

I managed to get a char dressed, but I also ran into probs with the regen, a bear mauled me severly before I managed to detonate it and my char ran of breath while under the effects of the spell. Haven't made a sword yet though, only a hatchet :P

I learned something important just now: If you use the blood drain spell, dont step into the line of fire while it's casting, especially not when fighting a shadow demon!

Rabbit bones are heavy! I tried to make shirt from some, but I couldn't pick it up. Bones can't be used for arrows or shortswords. But rabbit cornea pants are brighter than white!

Hi! Been lurking for a while, decided to say something since I ran across a few interesting bugs(?)

1: "Rings are in fact made from transdimensional elastic, capable of surrounding your entire body." Having put a Rabbit Skin Ring on my tongue for fun value, I decided to try to get it off since I felt it wasn't very hygenic. Attempting to do this by clicking the "wear" button then the ring brought up the wear menu again, from which I figured "Oh, it'll change the wear location." Clicking one of my ears, it displayed the ok mark and went back to the inventory menu. However, rather than changing the location, both my tongue AND my right ear were now highlighted in green. Things got even sillier when I went through the process again and accidentally clicked right upper arm, giving me a magical ring which protects my tongue, right ear, and right upper arm. I can only imagine that with sufficient patience one could cause this to cover the entire body in some kind of magical Shield of Ring.

2: "...if you opt to use Blast Part on a tree while standing inside it, remember to be well armored."
Deciding to test my armor by collapsing trees on myself (blast part the trunk, the rest will fall on you) I blew the nearest tree into little bits and watched the branches collapse on top of me. Losing all my stamina from this, I figured I was bound for death, but after a short rest (one press of w) I could examine myself and find that I was... unharmed? Although I had seen several hit messages, apparently my shirt and pants of rabbit skin had taken the entire damage. It took 5~ trees collapsing on me before I finally took sufficient damage to be unable to stand, although I'm sure I could have Regenerated myself to full health.

3: "A little known secret in the world of item making- Material is only consumed once you finish the job, and hence one object can be used to create an item of any size."
Easy one; Unknowing at the beginning of the game, I killed a rabbit and skinned it, getting prodigious amounts of skin in the process. Then, in the item creation menu, I selected one item and could designate it as the item to use for all parts of the item, and it would be produced correctly. In theor, this means that not only is it possible to cover a person's entire body with a rabbit's skin, but it is possible to cover half their body with only the skin from one of it's toes...

I realise that this is not a big deal, nothing that horribly crashes the game and incinerates my hard drive. But since they are (or seem to be) bugs, and I find them so funny, I thought I'd mention them.

He he -- yeah, I had decided a year+ was long enough to wait, but there are still lots of issues like that.  Size is completely ignored, and weights are very spotty.  There are a few reality checks on the wear screen, but not much.  So much more work to do...  the armor numbers are quite unbalanced.

At least you guys have been somewhat entertained.  Thanks for the replies!

Cool I managed to start with an Arrow of Pure Evil! It was very... unused. And I managed to make some nice weapons, one out of black bark and one out of white bark  :) and of course, black bark pants and some colours I dont know the name of Rabbit skin and muscle shirt.

Btw, is it possible to somehow make a spell/find a metal a little tad stronger than bark?

None that I know of...unless you want to create the spell yourself in the editor (which can only be used if the game is run in 640&480 mode).

The best way to get the material you asked for is to change the material spec of the tree to your liking, which is very easy to do.

I changed the values of the bark so that it is more like metal and the results were pretty nice   :D
A longer sword has a much better chance of cutting of body parts.
