IMMIGRATION SOLUTION

I genned a world with super dwarves(no food, no drink, no sleep) and went to a glacier, the first attempt ended in failure as they all died in the cold, but the next attempt I dug into a volcano and they got them all down there, sealed off the obsidian cap(put walls in around it). when immigrants arrived they died from the cold after a month of waiting for me to let them in.

Pesronally, I find that giant bats, GCS, military service, and magma are the most effective ways to deal with useless immigrants. Notably the last. Plus, they will contribute to your economy as they are encased in obsidian! But your way is imaginative...now if only necromancers were implemented...

There's never such thing as a useless immigrant.

Especially if you're trying to build a giant statue of somethingorother. Cheese makers are just untrained masons in need of a chisel.

eh, it wasn't imaginative, it happened accidentally...
so do you think that more immigrants are going to be arriving next year?

either way with my mods, I don't use masons, just metalsmith(copper)

Agreed.

I never understood why people kill off migrants they deem useless.

For instance, a novice cheesemaker is so low in skill that, if you reassign him to masonry, he's only slightly less bad at his new job as he was at the old one. Migrants are hardly better than unskilled peasants now.

I guess I get migrant slaughter if you're trying to keep your fort's population down, but if your next migrant is a ranger and you needed a brewer, it's not a huge loss to just switch their labor options. By the time you get that (untitled) brewer, you can probably train up the newbie to at least competent.

I prefer to separate the useless migrants completely from the rest of the dwarves. I then conscript them and throw untrained an unarmored Dwarves at sieges, with hilarious results. And because the rest of your dwarves never see them, your fort won't go into a tantrum spiral when your 30+ worthless conscripts die fighting an Orc siege.

the only immigrants you cant get work out are babies and children, fact, for a good 5-12 years that is i guess =P

Just do the standart 4x oversized bridged over the vulcan, place immigrants ontop, pull the leaver.
