Bats Ahoy!!!
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:47:27 am »

Okay, my Trade Depot is at the entrance of my fortress, conveniently underground and art of the single path into my fortress (merchants can help fight sieges too, eh?).

Now, what's interesting is that a massive mob of bats (just normal vermin ones, sadly) have decided that this small cave-like area is the perfect place to live.  The thing is, I don't want them inside my fortress, so I need to find a way to kill them off from afar, without magma or water.  Fun stuff.

Buy a cat from the Traders, it will go through those bats like a blender.

Add magma and its like a hot cat through bat butter.

Oh god, my version of the dwarf heaven map area had x16. I want to cry a little they were killing caravan before they made in doors and they ate my best marksdwarves.

Tame and breed 'em for the meat, bones...and of course, for fun! That's what I'm trying to do with the two on my map...As for the topic here: if you want something a little more challenging than a cat (which is fine too, of course), try setting animal traps for them. As a bonus, your dwarves can then eat them.

To be clear - you can tame, breed and eat giant bats, but not "bats", which are vermin, right?

You can catch either, but the latter are only for novelty pets, right?

Yep. Bats are vermin; Giant Bats are creatures.

But dwarves CAN eat vermin; they eat them straight out of the animal trap cages. So technically, you can eat both.

Only if the dwarf in question likes bats. I think. Ive only ever seen them eat purring maggots and lizards.

I've seen them eat live fire snakes, so I don't think they have to like it. Just not dislike it.

But dwarves CAN eat vermin...

True, but I think they're only a last resort, if the dorf in question is otherwise starving.  They can't be cooked, and I don't believe they're on any dwarfs "favorites" list (tho' I'm not sure - hard to prove a negative like that.  Has anyone seen otherwise, and the dorf actually seeking and eating that vermin?)
