Angry Drunk Elephants
« on: April 21, 2009, 02:22:23 pm »

http://www.cracked.com/article_17032_7-species-that-get-high-more-than-we-do.html

We at Cracked don't want to be accused of inciting a panic, but our sources suggest that these raids aren't isolated events. It's only a matter of time before the elephantine hordes descend upon mankind like a plague of tusked, four-ton locusts with a penchant for rice wine and forced sexual congress.

Wasn't there a video on Youtube showing various animals from a nature show getting drunk on fermented fruit to the commentary of some smooth-talking and possibly British guy?

I loved those shows. They always strived to show you the cool things in nature and not just some meh stuff.

I think there is a link to them in a video in the "Amazing Nature" Thread.

And as much as I appreciate you, I need to see those videos again.

I concur.

I once tried to make a bear farm by setting up cage traps with alcohol as bait.

Didn't work, since no bears came, but the Guzzler tag is an example of nifty little behaviors that make the game more fun.

"Drunken elephants" in stuff like this likely aren't drunk at all.

Think about it. Can you imagine how much booze it would take (never mind fermenting fruit on the ground) to get something the size of an elephant drunk?

I've heard of elephants taking out a sort of revenge on human communities for messing with their groups before. Who knows. Almost certainly not drunkenness, though; it would be like me getting drunk off my ass by using mouthwash.

 Elephants eat a LOT.
And more than likely they have a different system of handling alcohol.
And despite the larger body size, they could just be weak to small doses of the stuff.

Of course, I'm just saying this so the dream does not die.  :'(

I've seen a fair number of videos of elephants just playing around with each other, and they definitely CAN be mistaken for drunk, I'll say that much.

I just read a couple articles about the elephant attacks, and the police there seem to think it's most likely related to shrinking habitat or some sort of revenge, rather than drunkenness, although people do seem to think the elephants have developed a taste for rice beer, which wouldn't surprise me either.

I've seen flocks of crows outside my place getting drunk on fermented fallen apples.  It's pretty awesome.

From Wikipedia:
Despite its popularity in zoos, and cuddly portrayal as gentle giants in fiction, elephants are among the world's most potentially dangerous animals. They can crush and kill any other land animal, even the rhinoceros. They can experience unexpected bouts of rage, and can be vindictive. In Africa, groups of young teenage elephants attack human villages in what is thought to be revenge for the destruction of their society by massive cullings done in the 1970s and 80s. In India, male elephants attack villages at night, destroying homes and killing people regularly. In the Indian state of Jharkhand, 300 people were killed by elephants between 2000 and 2004, and in Assam, 239 people have been killed by elephants since 2001. In India, elephants kill up to 200 humans every year, and in Sri Lanka around 50 per year.

Musth
Main article: Musth
Adult male elephants naturally periodically enter the state called musth (Hindi for "madness"), sometimes spelt "must" in English.

Other causes
At least a few elephants have been suspected to be drunk during their attacks. In December 1998, a herd of elephants overran a village in India. Although locals reported that nearby elephants had recently been observed drinking beer which rendered them "unpredictable", officials considered it the least likely explanation for the attack. An attack on another Indian village occurred in October 1999, and again locals believed the reason was drunkenness, but the theory was not widely accepted. Purportedly drunk elephants raided yet another Indian village again on December 2002, killing six people, which led to killing of about 200 elephants by locals.

So yeah I guess drunk elephant rage is not so likely, but village razing rage is likely. So elephants should be made into a skulking civ so that hey might sen ambushes to you:)
