Ok so I got some wrestlers up and powerful while I set up a stable metal operation. Now, whenever I give them hammers they refuse to spar with them. What am I doing wrong?

Have you told them to use hammers in the weapons menu?
You also need the hammers to be in a weapons stockpile or else I don't think dwarves will know where they are.

Check their inventories to make sure they're not holding anything else in their weapon hands. Often when they're wrestling, they pull each others' clothes and armor off and hold it in their hands. If they do, they will be unable to hold their weapons properly so won't spar with them.

If you find anything like sets of greaves or chainmail in their hands, then mark them for dumping. Someone will come along and take them away, then they can start wielding their weapons properly. You can then go to the dump and reclaim the dumped armor.

Hey guys, thanks for the help. I'll check the greaves thing here in a bit.

Another thing, I can see the weapons in their inventory screen, and have assigned them to use that weapon, but they just won't spar. I set up 3 dwarves to have hammers, they're all holding them but they just walk around with them, no sparring and no skill in that weapon.

Hmm, they have weapons, but aren't sparring?
Is there a possibility that they are on duty?

Nope, all squads standing down, assigned to sleep in the barracks. They spar whenever I revert them to their previous weapons (crossbow or wrestling), but as soon as they get a hammer in their hands they decide it would be best to dick around haha.
