Improve DF´s by 40% with one simple addition.

A "unpause" Button.


Currently the game is one endless cycle;


Designate/Check/Order something

Wait.

Desigante/Check/Order something

wait for execution

Repeat.


What I suggest is a simple unpause button so I can ORDER WHILE I WATCH.

Currently you can´t do anything if you dont want your dwarfs to stop working, but with a simple unpause button you could designate while they work away. Or check there profiles while they do the work.

Or finally read all the engravings without feeling gulity.

We run into our first limit here: the scrolling speed lags at with fps, which can start to be a problem as early as 40fps.

In theory, it sounds great, but many people will find it clunky.

I have to agree; however, if it were to snap out of anything non-determinant (reading an engraving) and/or pause when an important event happens (injury, etc.) as toggles, that could help.

Personally, I question the veracity of anybody who claims to provide a small fix which adds great improvement to something.  Personally, I have no complaint about the way pauses currently work.

If you're feeling guilty, of all things, for reading your engravings, then I think you have deeper problems than an inability to multitask in-game.

Our top dwarven scientists came up with that figure. When questioning them on their methods and what it means, the room unexpectedly filled with magma. I suppose we shall never know.

I brought this up years ago, and Toady said it would be hard to change/wasn't on his list of priorities. I do agree with it though, as it moots the unwieldy interface and speeds the game up

I don't see the point really. The game is already pretty hectic, and it's nice to have things freeze for a moment so you can designate and browse without interruption.  It would also be /slow/, since the game would have to recheck for obstructions and allowable tiles with every frame.

At least having the "pause if ()" File accessible would help limitless

I like this suggestion too. This always kind of annoys me when I just want to [k]inspect something. It also annoys me some when I am [d]designating, especially bedrooms. Sometimes it can take me a bit if I'm going for some sort of pattern for my bedrooms and I want the game to just keep going while I'm dicking around with that design work.

Wasn't that about 'v'-ing over units, instead?  And Toady said it wouldn't work because of how units move constantly?  Or am I thinking of a different thread?

Designations are a good candidate for this kind of thing because terrain doesn't move and the game doesn't care if you create unreachable designations or whatever.

Oh btw, I am playing Speed:1 and I still spend nearly half of the time paused...
