Req468: Plant parts.
« on: April 19, 2009, 01:21:13 pm »

Currently, all plants and shrubs (except under certain circumstances), when harvested, produce a single item: the plant itself, which, generally, can be eaten, brewed, and/or cooked, and its seed can be extracted.

However, many plants possess more that one useful product. Take these for example:

Stamens and Pollen: The reproductive mechanisms of plants, a skilled grower could use these to cross-pollinate (or simply aid in normal pollination) crops.

Thorns: Many plants have thorns that contain a light venom. A brewer (or something else) could remove the poison and use it for something else.

Petals: Depending on the plant, petals could be worthless or an extremely profitable trading item.

Seeds: Herbalists could, if lucky, extract large amounts of seeds from a single plant, as opposed to a single seed from a single edible plant.

Roots: Brewable into all sorts of things.

Insects: Obviously, many plants are going to contain insects feeding on them, which could be killed and cooked by the exotic dwarf, or tamed by dabbling animal trainers.

This could possibly work by having an herbalist "gather" from the plant, then all parts of the plant would appear in a stack where the plant was.

All these things sound pretty useless to me ...

... but the system could be useful. Like. You could get oranges and apples from trees. Not that any dwarf would ever eat that, I'm sure those Elves or Humans wouldn't mind, once we can play as them.

Those trees'd be all like IIII've got a lovely bunch of coo - coo-nuts! *nanana-nah-na-nah* Here they are all stannnding in a rooow *nanana-nah-na-nah*

I would rather be able to gather just the berries from those strawberry bushes rather than digging them up roots and all. Same applies with trees.

It's probable that the 1x Seed and 1x Apple refer to a whole bunch of them, enough to plant or get a meal out of

It is true that some seeds are planted in a bunch for a single plant (Or at least what is considered to be a single plant.
