Hehe. Nothing wrong with playing a game inferior to Final Fantasy Tactics. Most games are, in truth. At least, in that genre.
I have not played many games in that genre, but this statement seems dubious at best.

Laharl is level 20 now.  Can dish out some nuke or something.  Deals like 150 hp each guy it hits.  Pretty sweet.  EAT DIRT.

Well, in my opinion it's waaaay worse then tactics. Has some neat ideas, but generally inferior overall.

I woudn't say that Meph, Disgaea hits ALOT of niche appeal, and besides that, it's not as easily broken as tactics is.

I remember reading the FAQ for Tactics' 1 character challenge and it being described as being easier than playing normally...

Well, like all opinions it's subject to the player. But, for me, I couldn't even be bothered to finish Disgaea. I've played through Tactics about 3 or 4 times. I just find it to be way more fun and interesting.

And while tactics can get broken, it's also quite challenging if you don't spend a huge amount of time grinding to level your characters.

That is one thing I liked about it, that the enemies adjusted their levels to match yours, so it's always trying to be challenging atleast. With Disgaea, you can uber yourself up to impossibly strong levels, and whip the strongest enemies with but a few paltry blows. They both had their fair share of grinding though, I think the only difference being that it's more advantageous in Tactics to grind in the early game, while it's only advantageous in Disgaea for the late endgame, and even then, only for bragging rights.

It did have the unfortunate side-effect of eventually having random nobodies becoming stronger than the final boss though.

Believe it or not, a level 1 character can be made to be stronger than a level 9999 random character in Disgaea. I've done it.

What I really wanted about Disgaea DS was to play Etna's Story, an entirely different non-canon storyline for the first game. Always sounded really interesting.

Yeah, wow.  You were suppose to lose so that your buddies came in to save the day.  Anyway, I'm stuck on the THIRD fight with Mid-Boss.  I mean seriously, when is he just going to give up and join my group?
