Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit version
AMD Phenom II 920 2.8GHz (Quad core)
4 GB of DDR2-1066 RAM
I'm not sure the video card matters much, but it's a pretty good one.

This computer is so new I've yet to install DF on it. It's zounds better than the one I upgraded from, which could run a 6x6 fort with 200 dwarfs at about 20 fps.

To the first post:
On a 6x6 map with everything turned on and plenty of features you will(assuming we're talking just 40d) get around 300-400 FPS just starting out, this is without partial print.
More dwarves will eventually bog you down more and more, but a full sized 200 dwarf fort should still run about 30 FPS.
Those are basically the same specs that I have(9600GT, tho. :( )

DF runs on this laptop really well.
Geforce 9650m GT (1GB)
4GB RAM
2.4 GHz CPU (Centrino Duo P8600)
Pretty nice comp over all. I wish I could get a bit more ram though, and a faster processor.

Why do you need to have more RAM? 4GB is perfectly enough for a "normal" user. My x64 Vista is faster than WinXP, and I also have 4GB RAM.

I feel so put down when people talk about DF on their computers. I'm running DF on a 700 MHz PowerPC G3 with 256 MB of RAM. Then again, it shows you can run DF on just about anything, although Adv Mode is slow as dirt.

I'd be interested to hear how well the AMD does actually..

What's your operating system?  If you're running a 32-bit OS, you cannot address more then 4GB of RAM.  Also, Dwarf Fortress might not be able to address full 4GB.

I have 32-bit Vista Home Premium.
I get ~30 FPS with 130 dwarves and a rather large river, everything on, partial print off, which is weird, because I would think with my system I would get more than that.

It's all about the cpu. I got a 0 fps improvement going from

Celeron E1200 1.66ghz 512k(!) L2 cache
Integrated graphics
1 Gig ram
(XP)

to

Celeron E1200 1.66ghz 512k(!) L2 cache
9600GT
4 Gigs ram

The only 'improvement' was I could increase G_FPS from 10 to 50 with no adverse effect.

Um.. I am also thinking about getting a new laptop, so should this be able to run DF well?

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad Processor Q9000 (2.00Ghz)
1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M

4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
?

Holy cow...that is some uber slow system.  ;D You must turn off all features and play on 2x2 maps with 30-40 pop limit I guess.

I used to play DF on a 400 MHz celeron. Of course, this was back before 3D version, so I don't know if it's possible now.

Do you remember the FPS?  Not as bad as 3D, but still.

I'd be interested to hear how well the AMD does actually..

I just got a Phenom II 2.8GHz triple-core, and I can run 40d11 fairly well.  Running water in large volumes slows me down by a good 10-20 FPS, but when I say large volumes I'm talking about a cistern comprised of eight stories of 23-tile-diameter circles, all filing into a single-wide channel, and then entering a complicated pump tower where it pressurizes my dining hall wells and creates an artificial lake which is constantly trying to evaporate in my hot climate.  Without that complicated hydrodynamic system running I can get 60 FPS with 100 dwarves in a 5x5 fort with magma pipe and a brook.  Pathfinding slowdowns alert me to ambushes before they happen, giving me plenty of time to man dwarf the parapets and release the hounds.

1.) Dwarf Fortress does not use multiple cores.  It benefits from, at most, two:  one to run DF and one to run everything else. Unless you're doing stuff like doing media-encoding or playing Counterstrike in another window, in which case you're just weird.

2.) Dwarf Fortress does not care how impressive your video card is. It uses OpenGL, but very simple stuff that any card should be able to do.

3.) Dwarf Fortress benefits more from memory speed than memory quantity provided you can load everything. Even with a fairly mature fortress the game won't eat more than a couple hundred megs, and having more is no benefit unless it's being consumed by hordes of other programs. If you have a choice between 8gbytes of cheap memory or 4gbytes of really fast memory, DF will run better with the fast.

Just some thoughts...

for do this the most easily you need approximativly a quadrocore with 3GHz each processor, then emulate from 3 of them a 8-9 GHz monocore system and here you are ;)
