How big a fort could I run with this comp?
« on: April 18, 2009, 07:07:59 am »

I'm getting a new computer and was wondering what sort of forts it could support - what size, features, and number of dwarves before slowdown. I have no idea how to work this out but I know some people can or have similar builds, so please tell me :o

Intel® Core™2 Duo E8600 (2 X 3.33GHz) 1333MHz FSB/6MB L2 Cache
8GB CORSAIR XMS2 800MHz (4x2GB)
1GB NVIDIA GEFORCE 9800GT PCI Express + DVI

Far, Far more than I can.  16x16 might be an exaggeration but you should be able to do pretty damn close to it.

The default 6x6 should be easy for you regardless of other factors if it helps.

Quite big, I would recommend a small spot still so you can have ALOT of dwarves.

This is a decent system. You won't have FPS problems on 8x8++ maps even. [150+dwarves & all features are on of course..]  :)

Go to a 2x2 or even 1x1 and set the FPS cap to 2000.   ;D

Pre-recent optimizations, on an E8400 clocked to about 3.7Ghz, I can manage 30+ FPS with 200 dwarves and 200 animals, a lava moat, a working aqueduct system that is capable of being pretty well controlled, on a 9x9 mountain map with about 90 z-levels and a real river, a cave river, chasms, a volcano, and potentially HFS that I haven't found yet. I haven't done any sort of metagaming to improve my FPS, either, and I have all options enabled. I imagine you'll get similar or better. :)

That's amazing.  I would get about 4 FPS maybe.

I'm also wondering how many dwarves/what size my new comp will be able to handle...
Core i7 920 (4x2.66GHz)
6 GB (3x2GB) of G.Skill DDR3-1333 RAM
896MB XFX GeForce GTX 260 216SP (55nm)

Still looks really good.  I wouldn't mind having one of those.

DF runs on this laptop really well.
Geforce 9650m GT (1GB)
4GB RAM
2.4 GHz CPU (Centrino Duo P8600)
Pretty nice comp over all. I wish I could get a bit more ram though, and a faster processor.

More RAM?  4GB is enough for me.

Why not, my specs.  As a recall.

1 GB RAM
2.0 GHz Dual Core
256 MB Radeon X1300

Dwarf Fortress actually runs surprisingly well.  About 25 FPS usually.  That being on my 16 year old fort.

2GB RAM
2.77 ghz core 2 duo
ATI Radeon 3450 HD
Vista SP1 32 bit

I can do 200 member 4x4 forts with all features 67 z levels and rather complex water systems easily at more than 50 FPS.  This was a budget system (as I din't feel like doing the research and compatibility checks to build my own) but I got vista rigged up to use only about 512 MB of the ram instead of a full gig like I expected, so the low memory for a vista system isn't hitting me too hard.

Spoiler: HFS related (click to show/hide)

My old computer before I got this one could hardly do the same fortress with 100 dwarves without the complex water systems built yet at 10 FPS.  And being used to it unlike some other folks, I could actually play at that speed and still enjoy it.

I need another GB of RAM.  It would help so much.

What's your operating system?  If you're running a 32-bit OS, you cannot address more then 4GB of RAM.  Also, Dwarf Fortress might not be able to address full 4GB.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.
