Destructible trees
« on: April 18, 2009, 06:30:57 am »

I'm quite puzzled that when I searched for this, nothing turned up.

Basically, trees should catch fire and eventually burn away when exposed to another burning object. Magma should immediately destroy the tree.

This should be relatively easy to implement, since you can already set trees on fire in adventure mode.

Trees count as constructions in that they are completely immune to heat. You could throw a tree into the sun and it would be unphased. What they need to be like is statues. Block a creatures movement, but be affected by liquids which are allowed to flow through them.

Sounds good to me. I'd like to see walls react to heat too. Some day, I SWEAR, I will entirely destroy a human town with magma.

I think this is coming in the Next Version™, but I can't be quoted on that.

There are changes that will affect the materials that things are made of (like the wood that trees are made of), but there aren't any changes that I am aware of that will affect the way things like trees and walls are represented within the game.  We already have walls made of rocks that have melting points below the temperature of magma, so adding more details to the rock materials isn't going to change the fact that walls are affected by magma.  I suppose the same is probably true of trees as well.

OP:  It is a bug.  Ignore it and wait for it to be fixed.

I thought it wasn't that trees are immune to fire. I thought it was that Grass burns so quickly that trees don't catch fire in the process.

Nope.  Trees are technically constructions, so - even though you can set fire to them in adventure mode - they are not destroyed or even harmed by heat.  This is why you get a cave-in from carving a ramp under a tree tile, even though the floor has been carved away.

I'm not sure a tree should be destroyed by fire. Ever seen the aftermath of a forest fire? Trees are standing.

"What happens depends on the type of forest and the severity of the fire. Some types of forests, such as ponderosa pine forests, typically do not burn down during a fire; the fire burns the low-lying vegetation but not the trees and regrowth is quick. Other forests, such as douglas-fir forests, with a dense canopy take many decades (even over a century) to replace." --wikianswers

So basically we have all these different kinds of trees, logically they should react differently to heat. Some would be destroyed, some would die and rot but still be able to harvest for lumber ... and some would sing "Stayin' alive" and hardly be affected at all.

Also I was a bit disappointed when I fired a catapult and didn't hit any goblins.. I hit a darn TREE! and it acted like it didn't even care. The rock actually broke upon impact and the tree was all like "That don't impress meee much! ah-ah-ah-yeeah."

If trees eventually catch fire, I want eucalyptus trees to be implemented. They actually explode when lit ablaze.

That tree should have mobilized and come after you.
