The funny thing about modern RPGs though, is that they completely undermine the point of the game itself. Since most epic battles finish with a fancy cutscene, the fighting you did actually feels like filler, and the outcome was irrelevant anyway as long as someone survived. I didn't get the same vibe from older RPGs, probably because virtually every boss battle simply ended with the boss not being there anymore and half your party being eviscerated.

Sorta like DF!

If DF had boss battles... I need to get back on my Insane Difficulty mod!

No no...in DF the boss (i.e. megabeast?) is still there. It's just that it's there in handy corpsified form, for convenient transport and storage.

If we're talking about entertainment oddities...reality TV, anyone?

*shudder*

In video games, my biggest pet peeve has always been railroad plots and artificial restrictions to keep the player on the rails. Virtually every RPG is guilty of this in some form or another, be it a conveniently placed boulder preventing you from taking a useful shortcut, or an attack of cut-scene-itis when you try to do something the game doesn't want you to.

Yeah, well, the Megabeast is still dead, and so is half your group, kay?

Morrowind was a great game, and despite their many flaws, so were arena and daggerfall.
Sadly, Oblivion didn't live up to the hype, and it still hasn't got many good mods.

I hated how in MGS: The Twin Snakes, you would fight someone in a crazy fashion, but in the cutscene, Snake would backflip off of missiles, dodge bullets, and JUMP at someone off of a giant chunk of concrete that they threw at him. Also, he suddenly has a grappling hook in one cutscene that, if I had it before, would have made climbing that control tower ten times easier.

Hmm... I'm not a big fan of the overly sexual battle armor as well.

There's a good reason.

1. goddamnit, i have been linked to tvtropes. there goes my morning.

2. Unnecessarily stupid obstacles. The gist of what I mean:

Perfectly fine obstacle:
we need to get to town x, but the pass is blocked by boulders! we'll have to find (bomb/way around/ladder/people to help move em)

Stupid obstacle:
the alchemist guy has the bombs we need, but will only give them to us if we (find his lost purple teddy bear/trick him into stepping three feet to the left so we can pick up the bomb sitting behind him/etc). sure we'd be willing to pay him more gold than his whole town is worth for it, but that's not an option.

i guess in some games, silly fetch quests are okay, if it fits the tone (maybe something like zelda), but it's so annoying and flow breaking when you're the epic hero of the land held up by some useless peasant who has the one item you need making you sweep his chimney before he gives it to you.

and being kept out by flimsy locked wooden doors when you're capable of slicing dragons in half with your megasword.

^ At first I read that as megazord, like in Power Rangers. Which brings me to two points. Shit catching on fire/making sparks when hit, when realistically that would never happen. And shittily done explosions.

Do they jump away from the explosion? Nope. Get blown away by the explosion? Nope. Wait for the explosion to happen before running through the cloud made of fire, and then once on the other side jumping forward is if the explosion just did hit them? Yep.

Basically, I hate any kind of cheesecake.  Not really for any reason inherent in itself, I just consider any attempt at overt sexual appeal to be a gross insult to my intelligence as a gamer or viewer.  And the more out of place it is, the worse.  Anyone else remember the sound test screen from Imperium Galactica?  That's what I'm talking about.

I wholeheartedly agree.

May I ask why Aqizzar refers to it as cheesecake?

I didn't invent the term by any means.  That's just what it's called, and no I don't know why.

Cheese Cake is good, too bad it fills you up in one bite.  Oh well.

My pet peeve is that they call pet peeves pet peeves.  Why can't they be something that make sense?!

I have to agree about how stupid sexually appealing armor is.  That's one thing I liked about Fire Emblem:  Path of Radiance (the only one I've played so far).  The worst it ever got was high-heels on Pegasus knights.  Aside from that, most of the armor was fairly practical.
