CG Art
« on: April 17, 2009, 12:59:43 pm »

So I've started tinkering with Blender and while I've still got a lot to learn, I've made these:

thinking of using this one as my new avatar

just mist and a couple of lights

Oh, and there's this that i made in GIMP a while back:

I'm using the Mist-Eyes for wallpaper (rendered bigger of course), looks cool if i may say so myself.

Thoughts about the Avi's? Tips for Blender? Requests for Your Very Own Spinning Cube Avatar?

I like the misty one personally. It looks cosmic in a way. Of course I like the spinning one, but that's because I'm easily amused and it facinates me. ^_^

Well, I could make one in Blender myself, but I'm not sure how to save the animation as a gif. can you put my avatar on a cube?  ;D

I'm not sure how to make blender convert it to GIF either. Saving them as PNG and using GIMP.

How's this?

PS: make sure to put it somewhere else before you link to it, i may delete it from my imageshack account at some point.

EDIT: Oops, didn't notice the extra frame... fixed it.

More fun with blender, and my first custom model:

Yes, I'm a Star Trek fan. TOS isn't my favorite one, but the original Enterprise is the simplest.

This is actually one frame of an animation that emulates the opening of the show. Too lazy to ani-GIF it ATM, besides, 800x600

*jaw falls through floor into basement*
wow... how long've you been doing this?

Questions/comments on each pic:

1. I'm assuming the globe and disco ball are meshes, and that the multi-colored sparkles are particles of some sort, but what about the colored squares in the background and the light rays around the ball?

2. Cute! That ship looks like it was made in Spore. (That's a good thing.;)) Did you use a "fractal" on the asteroids? I've read about that feature, but haven't used it yet. Also, how'd you do the headlights?

3. ??? Is it a blimp? With the name written on the side?

Also, I do plan to improve my Enterprise model, grabbed some pics to use as a guide. I'll probably do at least one of the other ships, too.

Here's some of my stuff, it's old and a lot of it is incomplete :(

Some texturing (didn't model them):

I think I just got owned.

*jaw falls through floor into basement*
wow... how long've you been doing this?
~two or three years

1. I'm assuming the globe and disco ball are meshes, and that the multi-colored sparkles are particles of some sort, but what about the colored squares in the background and the light rays around the ball?
The squares are just a huge plane with a discofloor texture, and the beams are just like the headlights in #2, which are just heavily 'visibilefied' spotlights.

2. Cute! That ship looks like it was made in Spore. (That's a good thing.;)) Did you use a "fractal" on the asteroids? I've read about that feature, but haven't used it yet. Also, how'd you do the headlights?
I used a feature (can't remember name) but it basically makes a bunch of random connected vertices with a certain (specified) amount of lumpiness. After that, it takes the texture (I used a brown version of the built-in marble texture) and pushes dark in, and light out.

3. ??? Is it a blimp? With the name written on the side?
Yes, it was originally intended as a visual aid for my story.

Wow, Davion, you too? Why haven't you finished them? Other projects come up?

About a week for me, but I have played with a Descent 3 level editor, never really made anything interesting, but I learned some of the terminoligy and the basics of modeling.

How 'bout you Davion?

I should have something more to show by Friday.

I tired learning Blender but its a pain when you don't have a keypad and you have to hold down the FN key all the time.

Turn on "Emulate Keypad". User Preferences -> System & OpenGL. Look for the button.

How 'bout you Davion?

Three to four years, though I haven't really done any modeling/animation in about a year or so.
