Wagon on Bridge on Bridge Action
« on: April 17, 2009, 11:21:27 am »

So... You cannot retract a bridge that has a wagon/megabeast/demon on it correct? And a retractable bridge can be built with another bridge as its sole means of support correct? If that information is true then what would happen if I built something like this...
Code: [Select]
122WWW221
122WWW221
122WWW221
Where 1 are retractable bridges linked to a lever, 2 is a retractable bridge using 1 as a support, and W is the wagon passing over 2.

... and I pull the lever linked to the 1 bridges, would the 2 bridge collapse along with the wagon?

In my experience, anything attached to the edge of a bridge is unsupported. Try it, and you'll probably find that bridge(2) will fall down and smack into many lovely pieces.

What about hatches, though? Can those be opened with a wagon on top?

Also, supports will not collapse if it would cause a wagon/megabeast/demon to fall. Seriously, its lame (OH GOD WHY ITSN'T THIS WORKING PULL THE LEVER AGAIN! AGAIN! AGAIN! GOD...DAMMIT!)I had some elaborate plans fail miserably because I did'nt know it would not collapse. It worked in the tests, failed when it needed to work.

I bet it would work if you manually deconstructed the support or mined out whatever was holding the structure that wagon/megabeast/demon was on, of course, with the latter two, nobody is going to get anywhere near them to try and do that.

The bridges just finished building and the depot is accessible so all is good so far. Now I just need to wait till our good friends the Elves show up to see the latest in bridge engineering in action. I even color coded the bridges somewhat, the basalt/dark gray bridges are the ones I will link to a lever and retract so that, hopefully, the granite/gray bridges will fall down into the magma along with the wagons.

Nice. So bridges attached to bridges work. I noticed that walls, floors, hatches and such will simply fall off (including the dwarf building it ;) ).

The dwarf will occasionally be blown back onto the bridge.  Noticed this when floor can only fall a single level.  Into my river.

I've got a ~10 z-level fall to the magma, so hopefully I won't have elves 'floating' to safety.

Just pictured an elf, covered in blood, wielding a wooden stick, floating around slaughtering things supported by 10,000 butterflies.

Or an elf being dropped into a vicious carp tank, only to be supported by the carp in a slippery living raft.

What happened to the red @ / @ ?

I guess the game does NOT want you to drop any wagons/megabeasts/and such.. holy crap.
