Wow.  I wasted tons of hours in SimCity 4 and this sounds a lot more fun on a per-city basis.  SC4 was never very balanced or realistic in terms of citizenry desires.

What's the transportation graph like?  That's a big dealmaker/dealbreaker for me.  In SC4, people always took the first path to work that they found by using A* with constant move cost, which sucked because it didn't reflect different travel times--if there was a residential street going the whole length of your map, and just a block over there was a freeway running parallel, people would often take the street because it was closer, and of course its traffic would go to hell.  If this has a remotely sane traffic model, then my god, I'll love it.

There is a patch to fix that.

Sadly it is fanmade. (Lazy developers...)

No sad about it. Its a very good patch. For sim city the best place to go for user created content (Which is very much worth it, honestly you cant play SC4/RH without it.) is http://www.simtropolis.com/ It really is a good place to get stuff. Make an account and download the Network addon mod. And select the x4 road usage in the installation screen, people will travel 4 times further and more (i got people going 4 maps by train, 10k of them. Make me alot of money :D) and they acctually walk. So bus stops become very useful. I'll dig out some of the stuff I'm using, its seriously a god send this site. Makes the replay value of SC4 increase dramatically.

Not sure how the AI handles pathing but there's a lot more options in road building and such - including, at long last, proper polygonal and curved road layout systems :D

Interesting concept. Either way, I have a question: What is the point of this game? Just build cities and...? [build more cities??]

I suppose. What's the point of a normal MMO? Just... kill enemies and kill more enemies? It only seems weird when it's not violent, he he.

Correct...kill enemies and get epix gear.  ;D PvP in "normal" MMORPGs can be fun, but not everyone likes it of course.

Same sorta setup as Sim City. It even has an offline mode (for the final release, not in beta). The online portion includes trade with other countries etc

Sounds interesting. Thanks for the info.  :)

City sims would be more fun if you could send terrorists to neighboring cities :P

How on earth do you use the on road trams? I can't build them at intersections and where are the stations?

Right, i shall post up a bunch of links NOW that are extremely useful and explain what they do.

The sim city 4 patch aswell from Maxis: http://simcity.ea.com/update/index_update.php
http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=21355 NAM: Network add on mod. A must for travel improvements.
http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=21293 Industry quadruplifier. Really handy, makes the amount of jobs seem more realistic.
http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=11421 good props set, handy to have stops graphic errors appearing.
http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=3599 sunken things. Makes handy lowered passages for tunnel entrances or some sunken highways.
http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=4174 Handy but very unrealistic. Its sorta a cheat for underground railways.
Thats not all i have, but generally what i use most.

...Holy carp balls of doom, that looks like something I could get lost in for months. I love building things, absolutely love it. Manage every little piece of detail of it to watch something magnificent to come out of it.

My feelings for this can be summed up in two words: Do want.

Though, chances are, executives are going to cock this up something fierce. Oh well, time will tell.

Hey, update:

They killed the MMO side because nobody wanted to play it, and in a few days they release "Cities XL 2011" which includes a lot of little updates.

My theory is that they where going to work all this stuff into the MMO side, but since nobody on earth wants to deal with griefers and newbs in their city building, they put all that content into this.

Incidentally, still haven't seen hide nor hair of the expansion modules they mentioned. Did those ever get released?

I think I read something about you being able to connect single-player cities, now. Perhaps a kind of single-player planet?

You know, I feel really sad for that engineer that worked for six months on developing a MMO server and all the fiddly bits for the network play. I imagine it'd be a little like working for weeks on making a really rather nice cake of liver and onions.

I really wish I could get SimCity 2000 Network Edition to work.  I think I'd need to set up a VM.

The multiplayer was good fun actually, just a real shame it was subscription based and didn't have much else other than trading involved with it.

When i first heard about it I was hoping people would be able to connect their cities together and work on a city communally, but alas it failed.

Also Cities XL 2011 is a bit... hurm, I can get it for 50% off but I was really hoping it was going to be free for those of us who bought cities XL 2010.

Yah, I don't think the MMO side really failed due to lack of interest, it was entirely the subscription model for something that ended up being removing your ability to save and adding a chatbar and basic trading. Also: making it nigh impossible to find good spots to build your city :P

I wonder if I can set up a planet server... like, send e-mails to "ABrown" or "RobS" @whateverthedomainis.com and so on until I reach somebody who can tell me who did the server code. If I was that programmer, I'd love to see my work get used.

Would any B12ers want to use that server?

If custom servers were possible, I might buy this game.
