Bought it on release, and IMO its decent enough. Most of the core city building aspects are there, graphics are pretty great, and the road system is downright excellent. However, (and it may have been changed when they threw out the pay2multi system) the 'resources' are a pain, and make the solo mode feel a bit off. There also seemed to be some sort of minor memory leak or something (may have also been fixed; haven't played it in months) which caused it to slow down to unplayable after a few hours. Restarting the game every few hours helped avoid that. The in-game advertising got a bit annoying, although in some cases (the billboards on the roads for example) it actually added to the game. Graphics are AMAZING for a city builder, especially when you zoom all the way out for a sattelite view that looks like a google earth image. The cities will get simply massive, leaving you with a nice challenge of managing the horrible traffic routes which evolved along with the city.

Play on a mountainous map with no natural resources.

Natural resources still weren't the issue. The only thing that mountainous terrain does is make city building annoying. I always had plenty of money. If I built something it would always end up netting me money even if I didn't plan it well. Not a bad game, but I'm still going to have to go with Tropico for replayability.

Well, I don't know about the replayability, but it's pretty relaxing and good. I agree that Tropico with different factions and a revolt chance was really good (I played that game to death), but in comparison to other citybuilding games it's pretty neat (but not very challending). A nice break from DF :D.

What I would have loved from Tropico 3 (after playing the original to death when I was younger) would have been a random map generator, instead of just a list of stock maps.  >:(  As for Cities XL 2011... there doesn't seem to be any way to increase the difficulty, which is a little... weird.

I just tried it. Like many others here, I think it's okay... But yeah, the resources are ridiculous and I'm pretty sure the game lets you have extremely one sided trades where you can have a super huge city that just takes free stuff from all your other cities. So I ended up building a city that only had power plants and oil extractors, a city with only farms, etc. Then made them all give all their stuff for free to my main city. Very facist of them. There's a whole lot of other issues too that seriously bug me after awhile, like how it's nearly impossible to tell what future effect of you building something is (how many power plants do you need me to make?!!!!) or how a lot of essential stuff are locked until you reach a certain population.

It's also distressing how they keep forcing you to start from the edge of the map.

Eh, every building has a capacity which is shown, and you can go to resources and see how much more do you need.

And there's an "everything is unlocked" mode, and you don't have to start from the edge of a map too.

The "stuff is locked" is only for newbies and those who love unlockables. I play with everything unlocked.

Oh goodie, it has SecuROM even on Steam. Of course, it doesn't tell you until after you've bought it and try to install it, apparently.

The best part is that apparently, it was cracked and torrented several hours BEFORE it showed up on steam. Well, I paid for it, so now I can get myself a cracked copy without a qualm.

Uh... no they aren't. Am I playing a different version from you? This is what I see:

To constrast, this is what the resources tab says:

So, unless I'm missing something. There is no information on how much a building is going to produce before you spend the money building it. Case in point, in this particular scenario I built 20 wind power plants but that resources thing up there? It didn't change at all. I have no idea why, and I wasted a shittonne of money.

Ah yeah, I see. You have to build it before you see numbers.

There are a few problems with interface too (too many stuff to click to demolish buildings), but it's 1.0 and I think interface may be patched.

I love the new options for roads, and the ability to choose road types as well.

The interface for me lags a little every time i click on something new, is this an engine problem or should i turn the graphics down?

I hear it has something to do with Steam.

Rats, the "no DRM" was one of the big reasons it was on my "buy" pile.  Oh well.  And I'm not the torrenting type.

Before I go ahead and buy this, what exactly is SecuRom?
