CitiesXL (Also discussion about Simcity 4)
« on: April 16, 2009, 04:47:13 pm »

Anyone heard of this? I'm an avid city builder... person, I loved simcity 4 but this game... is crazzzy! It has both offline standard city building mode and an online MMO side thats... like so weirdly cool looking.

Heres a link. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/04/16/set-squares-and-the-city-cities-xl-beta-registration/

Yeah, I have. Joined in as soon as they opened the beta. Which was today, afaik. I checked the site a few times before. It seems to be fun, if you check out the videos, a huge online simcity.

Looks... Like EA is gonna buy them up as soon as they release that.

A slight necro, but I manged to get in  to the closed beta by finding a site that gave out like 500 keys, i got one of the last 100. I'll keep you lot posted about what its like, I have heard a mix of opinions about this game, since the beta doesn't have most of the features avaliable yet. Like rails, highways, firestations hospitals and police station (that i know of so far) and the servers are a bit tempremental. But that is to be expected with a beta. So heres hoping it'll be fun. I'll put some pictures of my 'city' up.

I got one via Fileplanet but the servers are too unstable at this point to do an awful lot. Tutorials are solid? That's about all I can really say. Oh, and it looks very very pretty.

Uh oh, it's a Monte Cristo game. I'm a bit wary of them. They have some interesting ideas, but not all turn out very well.

This one has turned out pretty well so far, except for the whole online servers being hammered too hard thing that comes from having a beta started up without proper infrastructure

Interesting concept. Either way, I have a question: What is the point of this game? Just build cities and...? [build more cities??]

I suppose. What's the point of a normal MMO? Just... kill enemies and kill more enemies? It only seems weird when it's not violent, he he.

Same sorta setup as Sim City. It even has an offline mode (for the final release, not in beta). The online portion includes trade with other countries etc

Well, I spent a few hours on it today and this is what I can say about it so far.
  • I like the organic feel to cities now. Curving roads make the cities look very much real.
  • The demand system works a treat. Such as industries needing more than just population. Such as manufacturing industries needing both unqualified and qualified work forces, and also needing office to run them properly.
  • The trading system is fairly nifty. I have an agriculture based town at the moment, and with the trading system, i can sell my Agriculture tokens to other people in exchange for basically anything i need/want (water, power, cash, waste transfering, even people). Or sell them to the Omnicorp, an NPC corp that'll offer goods or cash for your stuff you produce in quantities. (This is the only thing thats keeping my city in the black atm.)
  • The development system is very much more realistic than Simcity 4. The lower class people generally don't want as many hospitals/schools than the upper classes do. This is represented fairly well that they really don't want anything other than jobs... which is ok.
  • The progression tree is fairly cool aswell. Things become unlocked with the increase in populations. Bigger roads, more civic services, denser zoning slots.
  • The maps are also fairly huge and very pretty. Even with the graphics turned down.

Interesting concept. Either way, I have a question: What is the point of this game? Just build cities and...? [build more cities??]

Nah, it works out fairly well, you get maps to build your cities on, each one has something special about it, fuel, better grasslands, mountains, beaches etc. And people trade with each other, and you can go visit each others cities with avatars and do stuff.
