Rice boy
« on: April 16, 2009, 11:47:59 am »

I stumbled across a link to a webcomic I had never heard of before last night while browsing another forum. I've never really been into webcomics. There have a few that I've read on and off, but none that have engrossed me as completely as "Rice Boy" has.

It follows the archetypal "chosen one" plot formula. The comic is mostly centered around its titular character "rice boy", a naive little fellow who has been told that he is the "fulfiller" of an ancient prophecy. Yeah, I know, we've heard that story told time and time again, right? But it is the world in which the story is told that sets it apart from the rest.

It is set in a wonderfully bizarre and psychedelically surreal fantasy world that is full of strange creatures that are unique and interesting. While we never get a in depth look at most of the peoples Rice Boy runs into through the course of the story we get the impression that they are culturally diverse and steeped in their own mythologies.

I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable read through. I was so taken by the story that I finished it in two sittings. My only critique would be that the pacing of the story, especially nearing the end, is a bit too fast (but maybe I'm too used to novels, I hardly ever read comics). I would definitely recommend taking a look! (By the way guys, I'm not a spambot :P)

I read the whole thing about a year ago, and while I liked it, it feels kind of incomplete. There are a lot of scenes where I get this vibe that the artist wanted to do more with what he had but just never got around to it. Really creative overall though, and definitely worth a look.

Yeah, that's what I meant with the pacing. Some parts really seem like they could have used a couple extra strips.

Wait until the guy who makes it finishes Order of Tales. Which is black and white and set a few thousand years before RB. You also ought to read Dresden Codak, a comic made by another web comic author that used to be member of Koala Wallop.

Or just read the Hob story arc, which begins HERE. http://dresdencodak.com/cartoons/dc_032.htm

I love both of these, man I really ought to get around to reading Order of Tales.

Once tried to conquer Earth, and succeeded! Too bad it got really, really boring, really, really fast.

One day, we shall all look back on this, and laugh. Sorry about the face, by the way, and the legs, and the eyes, and the arms. In fact, sorry 'bout the whole body.

I read Rice Boy in two days a few months ago. It's fantastic.

Dresden Codak seems sort of pseudointellectual to me, but there are some okay jokes. The older comics there are good, though.

Agreed on the pseudointellectual thing. Hell, I'd go further and say that it is a comic for intellectual types. Fine if you're really, really into philosophy, but kinda "meh" otherwise.

Wow. Just read that in one sitting and really enjoyed it, the surreal setting was just great :) Really loved the art style and the characters, even if it was a little predictable and ill paced at times.

This is the most awesome comic I've ever read. As said a thousand times before, the only thing wrong with it is that it's ill paced. I'm certainly going to have a look at the other comics.

I liked Gerund the most, by the way.

Did you just post a bunch of vegi-dicks on my board?  I've been trying to combat forum devolution a bit, and that involves fewer vegi-dicks!

Rather simplistic, unless I missed something. I did like it though, and that was pretty sweet how rice boy went around and severed peoples arms and legs.

i think it is less simplicistic than you think.. for example, it spoke about the problems of immortality.

that is probably one of the reasons because T.E.O. was my favourite character.  in my opinion, it fills almost the whole comic.

I got all the immortality qualms. I thought that was an already well explored theme or..?

i am just saying that there is more than just the story of a limbless person who find a tower. might not be original things, but i don't think simplicistic is the right word for it.

I think it's pretty cool how he's made his own languages and the fans have been decoding some of them.
