Gotta fight some piranhas. These guys are easy, don't even worry about'em. You have to fight a couple groups in a row before fighting a boss.
Who's name escapes me, but seriously, don't worry about this guy either, he's only slightly more intimidating than the regular piranhas, and that's being generous.

Damn brat.
Alright, now we're on the Veldt, which is a big empty plain. ALL the monsters on the Veldt are monsters you've met somewhere before, there are NO original Veldt-only monsters, all of them have to be encountered somewhere else before they'll show up on the Veldt.
If you run into a fight, sometimes this'll happen.
That kid'll appear and tell you he's hungry, which is rude, and so teach him proper manners by punching him in the face!
He'll run away and leave you alone, but he'll be back...
Anyway, go due east, and you'll run into a little town.
This town is special, because at the very back of the town is a relic shop, and this particular relic shop is the very first in which can buy White Capes at IIRC.
The importance of the white capes will be revealed later, but we're not gonna be buying any today, we can get them later.
Also, you can get a free elixir in the post office in the middle of town.
What's more important is this:
This bed in back room of the relic shop can be slept in for free and it will act just like an inn.
It can be very useful for when you're Gau grinding and you're an incredible cheapskate.
There's a very rare and valuable item in this town though, an item that is very easy to miss. and we can get it right now.
Go into this house and talk to the guy in the bed.
He wants you to read the letter on his desk. Do so, and the sidequest for the item is started.
Go to the post office and talk the guy inside.
You're gonna nned to spend 500 gil on the guy. Now to make the letter actually get to him, you have to spend a night at the inn.
As a note, you CAN'T use the bed in the back of the relic shop, you have to spend another 100 gil on the inn for the post office to take effect.
Then go back to the guy's house, and you'll find another letter, read him the letter, and repeat the process FOUR more times. Since you have to do this 5 times in order to complete the quest, you spend a total of 3000 gil getting this item, and what you get is:
Tintinabar! An item, that when equipped, will heal that player's hp when you're walking about. This is very useful for when you're Gau grinding, or just for everyday use to avoid having to use healing items or MP to heal yourself.
Now let's head to the weapon and armor shop.
Well, the weapons are all fairly useless, so I'd recommend not buying any of them. Boksi's going to be using his Blitz's, which don't rely on his weapon, and IWM's gonna be using his Swordtech's which ALSO don't rely on his equipped weapon, so you can see where I'm coming from.
Let's look at the armor I'm buying.
As you can see, we're not only buying armor for IWM and Boksi, we're also buying some for our other party members for when we finally reunite with them.
Aw man, we have 400 gil to burn! Where should we go?
OH! How about to the item shop!
Oooh, dried meat, sounds fancy. Let's pick some up.
Now let's go back onto the Veldt.
Oh look, it's that kid again!
Let's throw him some meat, and see what happens.
Ultim:AH! You good people! I give you shiny shiny!
Boksi: Sounds like a plan.
IWM: So we're bringing this child with us?
Boksi: Yeah, why?
IWM: He's a wild child! He has no place fighting the Empire, and it would be irresponsible to put a child into such dangerous situations!
Boksi: Pft! This kid's been out on the plains fighting lobo's and mechs and shit, you can tell just from looking at his starting skills, he'll be fine.
IWM: ....
Let me tell you how to make Ultim more useful! When you see a bunch of creatures out on the Veldt, Ultim will receive the "leap" command (not to be confused with the "jump" command, which we get later) and he'll jump into the monster pack, ending the battle immediately. Every time from then on on the Veldt, every time you finish a battle, there's a random chance Ultim will appear and rejoin you. The skills he learns will be the monster pack he jumped into AND the monster pack he appeared from. Ultim can only Leap when on the Veldt, and if you attack him, he'll runaway and he won't learn the abilities from that fight.
Ultim doesn't have the "Attack" command like everyone else, instead Ultim has the "rage" command, where he can select one of the many of the monster skills he's learned and then go into a trance where he'll randomly either attack, or use the monster skill. This trance lasts until the end of the battle or until he's killed. The rages won't use any MP, target enemies randomly, and Ultim has the added benefit (or unfortunate curse) of also obtaining all the characteristics of the monster he's raging. If he's raging a whisper, for example, he'll be undead, floating, and have the seizure status, which'll drain his hp. If Ultim rages something that floats, he retains the float status even after the battle's over.

I spend some time fighting battles to get some of Gau's better rages for this point in the game, these include:
Trillium: Bio
Commander: Break
Templar: Fire 2 (and innate protect status)
Hazer: Thunder 2
Stray Cat: Cat Scratch (4x attack power)
Ultim also starts two good rages:
Rhinotaur: Megavolt (weaker than thunder 2, but absorbs lightning)
Whisper: Demi (1/4 current health, floating)
I don't want to grind more than I have to, so I'm just sticking to those for now.
