I don't know about the moogle (the theory seems sound, though), but the glitch itself that lets you get out without Celes is real. I actually did it, but then chickened out.

If you do this, don't save, and then go back and get Celes properly, it really screws you over later in the game.

But first, I want to try pulling the KUTAN trick...

It took me a couple tries, but this is how you do it.

The guard will move up and down the strip of landing leading to the eastern exit, blocking you from going past. If you stand one block away from him however, then go into and exit you menu and go up at the same time that he's moving down, then you can move up and over him and get out of the town.



See?

These creatures are brand new methinks, so I thought I'd show them off, they're not particularly tough, but they can pose a serious problem since I'm alone and I don't have the Genji Glove, which is how I usually do this sequence.

KUTAN is the name of one of the moogles from the maze fight very early in the game.

The way it works is that the names and sprites are tied to a sort of belt, and if you skip over anyone, then the game processes the next person on the belt, which just so happens to be KUTAN.

S/he's vastly inferior to Celes in every way, once her get him/her that is.

First opportunity of course.  The Water Rondo is the only really useful dance.
