Transcendence: Inspired by StarControl2 and Nethack
« on: April 16, 2009, 12:42:33 am »

I learned about Transcendence in this forum - I bookmarked it then, and finally started playing it two days ago. Died ten times or so, didn't resurrect. I just reached the arena last night, but I think I would not be able to handle the next opponents... the 3 ships with mining lasers got me pretty hurt already. I'll have to upgrade my shield first.

I'm using the freighter, class III monopole deflector screen, 50MW reactor, the starting omni laser and Shtorm repeater. Sung armor (class V) on all sides, and I have a Akan 30 and 3 segments of Luminous armature in cargo hold (I had 4, but one got eaten away by degenerative nano).

Are there any players around? I would like to ask some newbie questions:
(The admin of Transcendence's official forum hasn't approved my registration yet)

1. I see that there are a lot of different damage types. Is there a complete list of that? I searched around and all the wiki of Transcendence are empty of such information.

2. Is there a rule about how those different attacks look like? If I know what damage types they're using I can retreat, prepare accordingly and return.

3. Is there anyway I can check what ROM I've installed? I don't want to use (and waste) the ones I already have.

4. I've found some ROMs that got names like a weapon magazine... what are those?

5. How can I tell if a piece of equipment is illegal? I lost a lot of credits by docking onto CommonWealth stations...

6. What weapon/armor are those Nomad balls using? They stole a lot of loot from me!

Is it possible to buy a better ship?

Blizzard is managed by dark sorcerers, and probably have enough money to bail-out the federal government.

Not possible currently, but I think it's planned for later versions.

The freighter is not bad in late game - as it has a lot of space to install improvements.

Ah, I love Transcendence. Never managed to beat it yet, though. As for your questions:

2. Is there a rule about how those different attacks look like? If I know what damage types they're using I can retreat, prepare accordingly and return.
Generally you have to go by how it looks. Beams tend to be lasers; squiggly beams tend to be particle weapons; blue fireball-looking things tend to be ion; pellets tend to be kinetic; exploding things tend to be blast; etc.

5. How can I tell if a piece of equipment is illegal? I lost a lot of credits by docking onto CommonWealth stations...
It'll have a little red box on its description that says "Illegal".

A man once said to me, "If you want superpowers, all you have to do is take acid and you'll have any superpower you want." He then asked if I had just, at that moment, shaved half my face; I revealed that as being my superpower. Being suddenly and inexplicably half-shaven.

Ooh, transcendence is fun. I have to play that again. I find you're best with either the Wolfen or the Freighter- the inbetween option just isn't good at anything, unsurprisingly.

It really is NetHack in space, but with a twitch, reflex element that makes it so awesome.

Upgraded omnidirectional turbolaser > Charon Frigate.

And a lotta other stuff.

Still haven't gotten to the core yet, but i'm making good progress. Got a good ship.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

I went dig around, and found out there's an unofficial forum, linked to on Xelerus, a mod database for Transcendence.

The unofficial forum has much more life than the official one, and I found my information there.

Here's the damage type list, from weak (relatively speaking) to strong:
laser
kinetic
particle
blast
ion
thermo
positron
plasma
antimatter
nano
graviton
singularity
dark acid
dark steel
dark lightning
dark fire

As for illegal equipment, I don't think I've seen any illegal tags... maybe they are invisible to me still (i.e. I need to identify them somehow).

Nope, there is no way to see what ROMs you have installed. You just have to keep track.

4. I've found some ROMs that got names like a weapon magazine... what are those?

Rowenna's Armor and Weapons?

Those will update your onboard computer with information and stats on many different weapons, depending on the volume.

As for combat, get an omni and a targetting ROM, and your problems will drift away.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

So those ROMs are helping me to identify weapons... I found 2 volumes so far.

I started with a targeting ROM (freighters get a random ROM), but the omni laser is too weak to penetrate shields now. For foes with harder shells I have to switch to my other weapons or I'll never kill them.

It's actually kind of easy. They all start out unidentified. If it's identified, you've used one before.

There's also an omni turbolaser and omni particle weapon. Turbolaser can benefit from laser upgrade module, which makes it a brutal weapon. The 'illegal' tag is always visible, no need to identify anything.

Transcendence doesn't really have an end. When you get to the last level, they just boot you to the High Scores table, without even a cutscene. Shame.

That's only because it's not yet finished.

I've found the omni particle for sale, but I only have half the money required. Oh and I've finally seen the illegal tag... it's on a "StarWar" ROM.

Yeah, Transcendence is brilliant. I'm completely horrible at aiming though, so I always end up using an omni weapon that targets for me. Though thinking back to it, perhaps it wasn't my aim, but more like my armor was weak to the enemy's weapon...

Those ships that shoot the paralyzing beam are very irritating.
