A few questions...
« on: April 15, 2009, 08:11:20 pm »

First off, a member of my fortress guard was blamed for a failed metal-crafting mandate (the third request for dang nickel....), and sentenced to one hammer blow.  Not that rare, all things considered, but this is the first time I've had a hammerer, so the beating method was different from what I'm used to.  As sson as the mandate ended I watched the hammerer, but instead of walking up and beating him, he drug the guard to prison and left him there.

I assumed that was the end of it, and that the guard would serve a sentence instead for whatever reason.  I looked at my prison later to check on him though and he was gone.  The hammerer had a happy thought for a beating, and the guard had a bad thought for being beaten, but the guard was unwounded, and the hammerer hurt his arm somehow.  Any idea what happened?  Is the prison thing normal or do they usualy just beat them where they stand like my sheriff...

Second, I just got my first two goblin PoWs.  I also just bought a jaguar from the elves.  I'm considering setting up and arena for one, and using the other to test my drowning pit.  Any better idea?  Unfortunately, I don't have magma so a slow burning death isn't possible.  Actually, one of the prisoners is a snatcher that came with another, and the other one managed to get away with one of the royal guard's kids, maybe I should pit the goblin against the legendary wretler guard.....

On the topic of the jaguar, if I were to mod the jaguars to be trainable as war animals, would I have to generate a new world for it to take effect, or would it work in my current game?

Thanks!

On the Wall is a Masterfully engraved carving of Urist McHardcastle and Goblins. Urist McHardcastle is surrounded by the Goblins. The Golbins are stamping on Urist McHardcastle. Urist McHardcaste is laughing at the Goblins. The carving related to the prolonged and bloody death of Urist McHardcastle in the Fall of 1659, the Winter of 1659, and the Spring of 1660. On the engraving is an image of Cheese.

1. Not sure, as my forts are always lag nightmares by the time the Hammerer shows up.

2. Test how many Z-levels it takes to maim, but not kill one.

3. No re-gen necessary. However, you won't be able to specify it at the kennels, so your animal trainer may go through any stray dogs available before training the jaguar.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

1.  Alright, thanks.

2.  I like it!  This will work perfectly as an alternative to the goblin torture device I hope to design and build within a year or two!

3.  Awesome!  Will he get animals from cages and chains?  If not I could just cage all my loose dogs temporarily to train the jaguar...

Thanks again!

You know the old saying. Elves are only good for two things. Dying and porn.

Hammerers always tie up their victims; I'm pretty sure you can prevent them by not having restraints,

Thanks.  I'd rather keep my restraints in case a crime doesn't quite warrant a hammer-strike.  Oddly enough, the time my sheriff tried to beat a legendary dwarf he killed him instantly, but the hammerer, with a masterwork steel hammer, couldn't even hurt the guy unarmored...

I'm thinking of taking the guy's hammer anyways, it'd be far more useful in the hands of a soldier, and if he gets too moody I can always go with the backup plan and flood his room.
