Magma Burial
« on: April 14, 2009, 10:05:40 pm »

So I was planning on making a area where coffins filled with fallen dwarfs (and maybe some statues)
get dropped into the magma. So that even if they were snatched as a child or some homicidal dwarf they still serve the fortress in the end by fueling the magma.

The question I have is will dwarfs have unhappy thoughts if coffins are dropped into the magma and melted.

Well I guess it doesnt matter for this fort seeing how one fireimp just caused the downfall of the entire place, it somehow managed to work its was into my food storage area right before lunch time and set a dog on fire which set the drinks on fire and then came the dwarfs before i had time to lock down the area and one of them just happened to have a friend that died and went into rage. The lone dwarf smashed the door down and escaped and spread the fire even further. Only 2 dwarfs survived one badly hurt so im just gonna dump everything thing in and reclaim. But I still would like to know for future forts.

I don't think you can unbuild coffins once they've been assigned to a dwarf. And while you could probably channel them out to "free" them, I'd wager that doing so would cause their contents to spill out all over the place.

I have unbuilt a couple of coffins when I make an "after-death tomb", when a dwarf dies and I want him in a specific coffin, but I never put a tomb for him, I put a coffin down, and if another dwarf is assigned, I unbuild it, and build another someplace else, for that dwarf, and so on until Urist McDeaddwarf gets his tomb.

I know you can unbuild full coffins and rebuild them elsewhere, but I have no idea if a coffin being consumed by magma can give...

Since rotting has no effect if it occurs in a coffin and magma has the same effect as rotting, I'd say no.

It might possibly be easier to pump magma into a burial chamber when you're ready to burn a dead dwarf.

Trying to drop a built coffin into magma with the remains still inside seems pretty difficult.

Something like this might work.

Code: [Select]
-------+
~~~~~~~|+-+
~~~~~~~@>0|
~~~~~~~<@ |
~~~~~~~|+D+
-------+

@> = pump
~~ = magma reservoir
D  = door
0  = coffin

Bury the dwarf, pump magma in, wait a while, pump magma out.

Naw, it would be easy to drop your mausoleum into magma.
Step 1: Open pit over magma.
Step 2: Built floor tiles out to about the middle.
Step 3: Build a support there.
Step 4: Expand the floor for however many coffins
Step 5: Link up lever to support
Step 6: remove the single floor tile connecting it.
Step 7: Pull lever

Wait- do supports support upwards?

And then pour water onto the magma, encasing the remains in a block of solid obsidian to be preserved for all time. ;D

Or at least until some dipshit comes digging along.

Coffins can be unbuilt, and the coffin and the bones can be marked for dumping. They won't do it like a funeral procession or anything, they'll just chuck the bones and coffin into the magma piece by piece, so it's somewhat unceremonious.

But there shouldn't be any negative repercussions in terms of negative thoughts. Having a coffin seems to preclude all those negative thoughts related to rotting and not being buried.

You'll have to deal with all your future coffins being used up by dead dwarves, however.

Just put them in coffins on a platform over the magma.

Collapse the platform and send them into the fiery depths below.

Once they are interred, I doubt they will get any "forced to enduring rotting of X" thoughts, even if they are floating around in the upper mantle somewhere.

would be really nifty if you made the coffins out of iron or bauxite, so you can see them resting at the bottom of the magma pipe!

I did this once with steel coffins, the bones inside were destroyed by the temperature.

none of the other dwarves seemed to notice or care, though.
