the long road
« on: October 04, 2006, 04:17:00 am »

i didn't know i was supposed to build a road until the first caravan complained about it, so i rolled up my sleeves to build one.  after some confusion and trial and error i managed to lay down a short stretch before my brains started to melt, as it has to be laid one square at a time, and when i chose to build it out of stone to get rid of some of the stone in my stockpiles i had to scroll down past dirt to get to the stone items.

it would be nice if road building were more like channel or farm plot building.  it seems you can already checkmark several items at a time on the building materials list when laying roads, so how about ticking off as many units as you want to use and the game allows you to lay just that many road tiles at a time?

Also note that only 8 stones are being used in the above image, but the end result is a 10-tile long road.

You can also use blocks, metal bars, and materials of differing types (so you could use a gold bar, dark stone block, and a rough stone rock, and it'd give you a 3x3 section of road, made from those materials)

I build my road in the spring of the 2nd year and it is always made from dirt. As I make stone blocks, I pave the dirt road. Why stone blocks? They give a minor mood boost to any dwarf that travels on the road. The same can done for the trade depot, any bridges, and workshops!

The extra effort makes dwarves happier.

I have another question: Stone blocks make roads with + symbols. So do metal bars. You can also construct metal blocks. Is a road made of metal block any better than one of stone block or metal bar? What about glass block?

The base value for both is 5, so I'm pretty sure that neither is better than the other.

That is actually not true, it takes 11 blocks to build a 10x3 segment.

Eh? 1 block will get you 3 'tiles' be they horizontal or vertical.

One block will get you three tiles, and one other block will get you three more later, but if you had used both blocks together, they would've gotten you seven tiles.

In general, I think, it's "tiles = 4 * blocks - 1".

Select multiple stones/blocks/whatever before hitting "p" ("place").
