Human Fortress RolePlaying Game!!! A New Concept!!!
« on: April 13, 2009, 10:39:59 am »

I wanted to try something new in the roleplaying section, so I'm making this. It uses a GURPS-esque system for character creation, and a hodgepodge of game mechanics that I thought up. Please don't start posting bios until I say to, the first 7 to apply once applications are being accepted will get the spots.

A small pioneering company has given you 7 the chance to work together and turn a 90 foot by 80 foot plot into something worth having, be it a fur trapping camp, a river fishing village, or a mining town. All sorts of skills will be needed, and with each summer will come a trading ship, and with each winter shall come a struggle to stay alive. It is spring now, and a surveyor has given you a map of the site with notable resources. A dwarven stronghold is expected to be but four or five miles away, and the elves live only across the river, quite enraged by your intrusion into their homeland. By net, bow, or plough, provide for each other and build lodgings.

Map.

Things of note: 1. The shitmobile wagon, with an inventory that will be determined based off of the skills chosen by the embarking party.

 2. A shallow river, traders come up from the south. The water is fresh and drinkable, even if it tastes bad.

3. A forested area, with approximately 30 trees.

4. A sheer cliff face, about 20 feet tall. Good mining site.

5. A really deep pond, stagnant water.

6. Some shittily drawn bushes that have wild blackberries and wild strawberries growing in them.

7. A small, gently sloping hill that is shear on the northeast side. It's only like, 5 feet tall, and it's made of clay. Has a tree on top with a birds nest in it.

Pioneers
1. SombreChapeu
2. Siquo
3. NUKE 9.13
4. webadict
5. Frelock
6. Floirt
7. Pandarsenic

Every time the trading ship comes, they'll take a report of how many more pioneers can be handled. Every two new pioneers, the company grants you five more feet on all sides. For every ten new pioneers, the surveyor will come along and tell you anything important that he can find out about your new land. To determine eligibility for a new pioneer, a check will be made against your supplies. You must have 50 stockpiled food resources, an empty bed, and 10 points of infrastructure.

Character creation: You have 100 points to spend. You can take on three quirks that will give you extra points to spend at the cost of suffering from whatever defect that quirk is. Skills need different amounts of points to buy based off of how useful they are. At embark, you can buy only two levels in a skill.

Tree cutting: 20 points.
Mining: 25 points.
Farming: 20 points.
Hunting: 15 points.
Trading: 30 points.
Carpentry: 20 points.
Masonry: 30 points.
Foraging: 20 points.
Unarmed fighting: 20 points.
Armed fighting: 20 points.
Archery: 20 points.
Speaking: 20 points. (Used for such things as persauding an npc).
Crafting: 50 points.
Pottery: 30 points
Forge-work: 50 points
Metalworking: 30 points.

Hemophobia: -30 points. Can't train fighting skills.
Hydrophobia: -25 points. Can't train fishing skills or use boats.
Hair-lip: -30 points. Can't train speaking or trading.

Also, some continued skill mechanics
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Characters have relative hitpoints, and stamina. Your relative hitpoints shows how close to being dead you are. You can have your arm cut off and survive, but your gonna be pretty badly hurt and you can't use your arm. A grey wound counts as 3 points of damage and doesn't interfere with working. A brown wound is 5 points of damage and interferes with any skill that uses the browned out bodypart, making you use twice the stamina . A yellow wound is 7 points of damage and stops any work using that bodypart. A red wound is 10 points of damage and requires bed rest til it heals. A severed body part is 15 points of damage, requires bedrest, and triples stamina used to do a task involving that part. You have a base amount of 20 relative hitpoints, and gain 2 for every level in any skill that you have.

Stamina is the amount of energy a character has. You have a base amount of 80, and recover 5 a turn. You gain 5 more max stamina per level you have. If you don't have enough stamina to do any tasks, you can sit down to gain 10 stamina per turn.

If you feel I missed something, or are concerned about the balance or application of a skill then please point it out, but besides that Applications are being accepted!

Alright, sounds like fun.  Here's a character sheet:

Name: Frey
Age: 24
Background:Coming from a long line of lumberjacks, Frey continues the tradition of his clan.  His motto: "By the axe we live and die."  He can be gruff and coarse at times, but has a heart full of merriment, and enjoys nothing better than drinking a few pints with freinds after a hard day's logging.

Tree-Cutting: 1 = 20pt
Carpentry: 2 = 40pt
Armed Fighting 2 = 40pt

You don't have to read up a whole sheet, I've got the stuff here. Age, name, background, are all up to you. The only thing GURPS-y is the skills, and those are here. It's over-simplified to play, but then who likes a turn taking 8 hours because you have to read 8 books to know how to do all the checks and rolls?

At embark, you can buy only one level in a skill.
4 Levels in Speaking

Anyway, this system looks a little confining. Also, if you truly mean for the pioneers to build wooden huts, you need about 10 times more trees, and everyone needs one level of carpentry for free. Otherwise they'll all live in caves.
Oh wait, clay bricks.. what skill is used to make stuff from clay? Perhaps you should add a potter skill, as to build houses, this will be very important.
...
I suppose that I might join.
Maybe.
Perhaps.

Thanks for the tips Nuke, this is still a bit of a work in progress. Also, the map is not the most accurate thing. Aside from the singular hill on the tree, each one represents close to 20 trees. I need to put in pottery, and the related metalworking professions. But, you have about 160 trees, and each one can be turned into about 30 logs. So, 4800 logs abound in the nearby area.

Changed the first and second posts! Added in information on pottery and metal related proffessions, and updated skill purchase!

As things go on, I plan on adding in skills via "new discoveries in the homeland" and "we have survival down, let's get some amenities". AKA, you can access new proffessions through either taking enough time, or by reaching threshholds within the settlement. Also, feel free to specify floorplans for any buildings you make, and feel free to request a change to the starting supplies.
