Something solid is missing.
« on: April 13, 2009, 02:29:53 am »

When playing the game, I found that something was missing. I couldn't really identify it at first, but then I caught it on my third adventure. There are no medusas or basilisks! Nothing that can turn you to stone. I want to have a creature, that when it fights anything in melee combat (with eyes), it turns that thing into a very high quality statue (with a description of what that thing really was). I want to have it set up so you can use said statues like any other, and that a character looking at a Stoned family member or friend will be sad or horrified. I want a medusa/basilisk to be able to trap itself by stoning characters surrounding it. I want it to be possible to trap/tame/train a medusa or basilisk. So if you put it in a zoo, anyone visiting will turn to stone, and you can unleash it upon monsters and traders (stoning a bunch of elves only to sell those really high quality statues to the human traders). How to defeat a medusa/basilisk would be to equip a mirror shield (incomplete immunity), blindfold, or use ranged attack. Having one's eyes gouged out by another monster would also make one immune.
Obviously, the set up involving this is far more complicated than can be accomplished in a mod. So, I am hoping that the Toady One will look at this and see if it can be added. I need my medusas as much as one can need something in a video game!

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

It's been mentioned before, especially now that vectorized diseases and such are in.

Crystal glass also protects against stoning.

One way to get a cockatrice is to have a ten year old rooster lay an egg, and make a toad breed on it for 40 days.

That will be difficult because roosters cannot lay eggs. Hens do.

Hense why they are so rare.

You just don't get that many egg laying roosters.

I think you want a brooding toad there.

Anyways, don't forget that the egg also has to be yolkless.

I hink we have to wait for some sort of artistry arc or something to make statues more important, at least.  After that, add a line of sight poison, stoning desiese that affects eyes first or nothing, and watch whole sections of caves be blocked off by your high adventures.

So, erm, guys, are you going to SLASH'EM-ify DF?
Heh, we need the beatitude system... you have consumed a cursed plump helmet roast, you are belching... you die of malnutrition later.

Oh, and footrices [Cockatrices in this case] , are humongous dicks, touch'em, stoned, look in their eyes, stoned, hear them hiss on the new moon, stoned, get hit by their eggs, stoned, hear them hiss anyother time, roll for resistance.
The only cure/preventive method is to either have a dead lizard, or have one in yo belly!

Pyrolisks [The other Footrice] don't petrify you, they set you, and your stuff on fire.

And I don't know about basilisks [Footrice] .

Quote from: SLASH'EM Cocktrice Encyclopedia Entry
Once in a great while, when the positions of the stars are
just right, a seven-year-old rooster will lay an egg.  Then,
along will come a snake, to coil around the egg, or a toad,
to squat upon the egg, keeping it warm and helping it to
hatch.  When it hatches, out comes a creature called basilisk,
or cockatrice, the most deadly of all creatures.  A single
glance from its yellow, piercing toad's eyes will kill both
man and beast.  Its power of destruction is said to be so
great that sometimes simply to hear its hiss can prove fatal.
Its breath is so venomous that it causes all vegetation
to wither.

There is, however, one creature which can withstand the
basilisk's deadly gaze, and this is the weasel.  No one knows
why this is so, but although the fierce weasel can slay the
basilisk, it will itself be killed in the struggle.  Perhaps
the weasel knows the basilisk's fatal weakness:  if it ever
sees its own reflection in a mirror it will perish instantly.
But even a dead basilisk is dangerous, for it is said that
merely touching its lifeless body can cause a person to
sicken and die.

Wait for the magic arc when magical effects, such as turning to stone will get added.

Sure, canīt wait to have my pet-medusa that I supply with my oldest/near death dwarfs so I can have nice statues of them
Just remember not to put those statues where family members or friends can see them. Perhaps set it up for everyone to have a grudge against this person, then put it in the meeting hall. "He/She saw someone he/she hated turned to stone, and laughed at their statue lately." It would be a bonus of different levels depending on how much they were hated or liked. A lover would likely go berserk over the statue being displayed. While a hated enemy would be ecstatic.

I think we have to wait for some sort of artistry arc or something to make statues more important, at least.  After that, add a line of sight poison, stoning desiese that affects eyes first or nothing, and watch whole sections of caves be blocked off by your high adventures.
I don't see why, but I really don't know much about the internal workings of this game other than what I guess. Statues are statues, you set it up to be a legendary statue, or one level below. Then change the statues title from "statue" to "statue of ****** " and add something like "This is the fate of those who gaze into a medusa's/basilisk's/cockatrice's eyes. It is made of granite, and depicts the attacking/running/whatever-the-character-was-doing-at-stoning form of ****** in perfect detail."
Why make it only the eyes? It is supposed to be the whole thing all at once, unless they have protection or resistance. It is the "contact" stonings that are only partial.

So, to get a cockatrice in your fort, you have to wait until a rooster randomly lays an egg, then go dig a pit under a toad outside, and throw the egg in. After enough time passes, a cockatrice will appear in the hole. I am guessing these occurrences are supposed to be happening utterly randomly though. So these creatures do appear, but extremely rarely. I don't know how rare a medusa would be though. In some cases they seem to be a race, in others there's just one, other times it is a curse that affects just a group.

We have demons, dragons, flaming monsters, things that shoot web, and a whole load of stuff that do unrealistic things without the magic system. I think the magic system would come into effect when un-stoning people.

Also, you people use the word "arc". I am certaintly a newbie, and I don't know what it "arc" means, I just assumed it was the coded structure of the game.
