I hate anime, too. Just because everyone's so obsessed with it.

That is a stupid reason to hate anything.

Well, it's true. A lot of people hate Guitar Hero and Halo for the same reason. It's human nature, doesn't make sense, but that's how it is. I did follow some anime for a while, and they degenerated into stereotyping themselves much like the Simpsons, but in only 2-3 seasons, so that gives me all the more reason to not like them.

 I never really saw something at a glance that really caught my attention from the anime world, save for a few examples. It appears all the recommended ones have evaded my sight. Still, nothing that shows to me has ever really appealed to me.

 I actually don't know what I like, as I apparently select things from every genre imaginable. The only animated things I have watched particularly recently that I followed were Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends and Avatar. I think I was appealed by .Hack(First book), but that quickly wore away after I read it again recently and found that is was the novelty factor of it being the first manga I ever read, and that all the other media put out by that particular title sucked.

 I suppose I had better ask my friend to lend me some DVD's of shows he likes and see if there is anything else that appeals to me. Drama and looping animations played for far too long for dramatic effect don't do it for me, as well as over the top attempts at 'cute' that creep me out.
 And while I like weird things, I don't like the Japanese definition of weird things. You know exactly what I mean.

Did anyone here see Ergo Proxy, Blood+ or Gun X Sword ? The first is futuristic and strange, there's "what if" episodes and an ending that I didn't get and am not sure anyone did, but it was nice. The second has vampires, swordfighting, and an interesting story if I remember correctly. The third has mechas and a vengeance-driven funny main character. The first and third have ~25 episode, Blood+ has 50. Those were the ones I enjoyed most, next to Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion.

I must say though, I could like anything: I've got something I can't explain for powerful guys becoming more powerful and beating stronger enemies. It's so bad I even enjoyed some Naruto despite the stupid plot, stupid characters and stupid everything (well, I was bored out of my mind, but still). Thus, even if they're not anything like that, I'm not sure of the quality of the ones above, but they did seem excellent at the time.

I watched every episode of Blood+, Haji is awesome.
That was one of the first anime's I ever saw, and it got me into it.

Wolf's Rain is fun.  The early episodes are a blast even if you're not a big anime fan; by the time it gets a bit deeper in, maybe you'll have acquired the taste.  If not, hey, like I said, the first few are a lot of fun on their own, and I think it could pass for pretty good Western animation with a deep-ish story.  It's good both subbed and dubbed, which is rare; I think it was on Adult Swim for a while.  This is a story-and-action driven anime that does not have big long fight sequences all the time; the few big fight sequences they have are dramatic without being excessive or taking the whole episode.  Supernatural stuff, while present, is kept well under control.  The music and art are both top-notch for anime.  One season, bit a fairly long season.

FLCL (Furi Kuri) is a good way to kill off a Saturday.  It's bizarre, has GREAT music that will really turn you on to Japanese rock, has plenty of really deep introspective meaning that you're sure you can figure out if you stare at it long enough, but most of all it's a serious 'wtf' ride.  You may not come away liking anime any better, but you'll definitely be weirder for it.  Also, epic music.  SIX episodes long...so you can get it off Netflix or something, and watch it all on the spot.

Fullmetal Alchemist is one I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned.  It's another one that made it onto Adult Swim.  It's about equal parts comedy, drama, action, and fight sequences.  Hell, I'd say it's broadly representative of good anime--if you want a good summary of what good anime is like, FMA hits square in the middle.  Good story, occasionally heartwrenching, minimal but present chibification, magic powers that don't go over the top.  It pays enough service to anime conventions that it couldn't be mistaken for western animation, but it's not dominated by them.  It's...like, what, 3 seasons?
