A bunch of you are anime freaks, right?

I've always hated your type, so I don't know why I'm doing this, but anyway...

Anyone got any anime they're recommend for someone who A) Loathes most anime he's watched (admittedly, not much, but still) and B) is new at this whole thing?

Paprika is an extremely watchable movie.  You'll hardly even notice it's anime.

I hate basically all anime shows, but Planetes is amazing.  It's on Youtube HD, subbed.

Aye, it depends on what you watched and hated. My favorite anime tend to defy explanation, but I'll give a simple description of the three.

Cowboy Bebop. Futuristic, jazz music, almost film noir-y at times.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which takes a while to build up before it becomes a little twisted and surprising. It's an inspiring mecha anime. "Don't believe in yourself, believe in me, who believes in you!"

Samurai Champloo. The intro text defines it. "This work of fiction is not an accurate historical portrayal. Like we care! Now shut up and enjoy the show!"

Berserk, it's the manliest show you'll ever watch. Don't read the manga though, even though it's just as, if not more awesome than the anime, you'll be gravely disappointed as it goes on and on and becomes more and more mediocre.

I'm also watching Fist of the North Star right now. It's an intensely badass show about a guy who goes from place to place ripping off his shirt and killing people.

as for anime, I recommend the series mononoke
it only has 12 episodes, and it is completely free of most anime stereotypes
no schoolgirls, no giant robots, no ninjas, just a very surrealistic artstyle paired with japanese ghost stories

Fine, go ahead and read the manga, but the MOMENT that the trolls pop up, stop reading, you'll thank me for it.

the manga gets progressively worse as time goes on, characters become more and more 2d, annoying two-bit characters are given more and more screen time, and the best two female characters are royally pussified despite having been bonified badasses not too long beforehand. By the time the trolls pop up, Guts has a nakama made up of completely useless characters that you WILL wish death upon at every corner.

EDIT: also, if you want a show with a (kinda sorta) strong female lead, try out Gunbuster. The first one, the first one is very good.

However, don't even go near the second one, it's absolutely terrible in every way.

I looked up Fist of the North Star once, and noticed that the main character's outfit is a direct ripoff of Mad Max.  Ergo, I'm curious on what the rest of the series is like.  Tips on where to see it?
