Nets, Lassos or Bolas
« on: April 12, 2009, 02:46:45 am »

How about a net, lasso or bolas that could be used like a weapon; it wouldn't do much damage (if any) but would have a chance to entangle the opponent, temporarily immobilizing them, similarly to being webbed.

They could also possibly be used as an alternative to cage traps for capturing some types of creatures.

Obviously, the size and strength of the creature would have to be taken into account, otherwise you could have silly situations with a dwarf catching a dragon with a lasso.

I like the idea of capturing animals without a cage, from a distance. What if you had several dwarves lassoing a dragon?

Not temporarily; they're hindered until they or someone else removes the rope from the particular limbs the rope hangs around.

Hmm.. for dragins, maybe this would be moved to some kind of field catapult with a net instead of rocks.

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

I would very much like the ability to ask my hunters to capture something alive for breeding...

gods yes.  SUCH a pain trying to guess where the random critters are going to wander...  I lost a black bear last night because the caravan guards spotted him before he hit my traps.

Hmm, I like the idea of nets. Not sure about lassos or bolas though, neither seem very dwarven. Maybe if they're something that other races (like humans) make.

I must counter the bolas statement: Add spikes to the bolas and have them connected with chains, and bolas are very dwarven.

Eh, if those non-lethal methods of capture fail, I'd best suggest projectiles ( with ropes tethered to them ) .
With said device, you'd either propel them at ( if they can latch on ) , or around said threat, and then anchor the free ends of the ropes.

Oh, and guys, to dwarfify the girly lassos, and bolas, use chains, and if possible, hooks/hooked barbs.

This would be pretty sweet. You could entangle that Elf before the essential beatdown would commence.Pretty nice idea for net traps too.

A net. Made of barbed wire.

Looks like the goblins are invading with upgrades in the future.

No, shot from a catapult, and is able to knock down the toughest, and most muscular dwarf. ( Dead Weighted Nets, ftw! )

Why build trenches when you can build adamantine bunkers and fixed magma-cannon artillery?

Now I just need to figure out how to build and remove fortifications without exposing dwarves, then I can move my fortified box around and call it a tank...
