Mangled children make less-abled adults?
« on: April 12, 2009, 12:58:41 am »

I have a child who was dismembered- lower right leg and everything attached is gone (dark gray). I think it got snagged by a trout when being carried around by its mother during infancy. Ever since, the child has occupied a room in the fortress and been kept by the dwarves (food and water at regular intervals). This has been going on for... years.

I don't really mind- not a big deal that the child doesn't do anything and requires regular feeding/care, but I'm curious about its future. In a few more years the child will turn into an adult (how many? dunno. is there a way to tell age?). I highly doubt that puberty or the transition from child to peasant will cause the leg to grow back. Once the child is a one-legged peasant and forced to do labor, though, will it be able to?

I think I've read that dwarves will continue to work (or attempt to) even if they're missing limbs, but maybe they just cancel the jobs? Will this dwarf be permanently bed ridden even in adulthood? Is it worth it to find out or should I just wall off the room and hope her parents don't freak out too bad when she starves to death?

There is a [Child Age: X] in the raws that determents how long they need to "grow up".

I doubt that it will grow back, but the peasant will propatly try to help as good as he can.

I suggest going a more dwarf-ish way.

Dig a nice hole.
Drop all seriously wounded Dwarfs, animals and pets in there. Drop the weakest enemy you have in a cage in there, then go up from that. The last one surviving will have gained enough stats to suck up the damage he took and will either work just fine or can be attached to the royal guard, so the nobels have something to talk about.

If you're gonna do that, just turn off all labors for the wounded dwarf and have them hang around talking all day instead. Stat gains from socializing are high.

No, don't do that! He'll be that crazy old dwarf who clamps onto every single dwarf he can find, saying: 'Did I ever tell you how I lost my leg?' That's horrible!

No, that's hilarious!  And classic, and so perfectly dwarfish.

Well, legendary stats make for quicker healing. My legendary tanner got shot by goblins, moderately wounding a few limbs, mangling his spleen, pancreas, and kidneys, and breaking his spine. He recovered totally. Somehow.

Surprisingly, very many dwarfs will say that with a red lung.

Unfortunately I don't think that includes growing limbs back :P

I'm liking the legendary conversationalist approach, but will the child-turned peasant hobble out to the meeting area or just stay bed-ridden? Guess I'll find out...

He still sounds like a candidate for the royal guard.

Hm. Further pokings show that it WASN'T the legendary tanner, and was actually the legendary carpenter.
With a minor wound to the lower spine, and a broken abdomen still remaining.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.
