"What is real?"
That’s a good question, Scavenger. One I doubt you will ever find the answer to. You are real, as you can think and feel. We can be sure of that. So is something else, to account for the unknown. We can be sure of that, too. Everything else is an uncertainty, one that has haunted your mind since you broke past the Grey Veil and created your own world.
It has led to many questions, like the logical Reason for morality, and the Reason
Why.
So what you're trying to say is that endless fields of dead bodies are an everyday occurrence here?
They are not dead, John. They are sleeping, as you were a moment ago, trapped in the Graylands. They cannot die, for they are mindlings. If they were truly dead as you know death to be, they would be, like me, on their way to the Afterlands. Only a few can truly kill or destroy (You being one of them), and the worst the Birds can do is to damage memory.
This is the same field as before. You have merely awakened from the darkness They inflicted upon you. We will leave this place soon.
…
You should not have followed the birds, yet you do so every time...
"How do I stop these terible things from happening?
I don’t know, John. It’s the question that has plagued me for all my existence. I live on only with the hope that once you have Risen yet again, you will choose not to Fall. It is You that has decided to repeat history. Time does not repeat along with it, and the universe grows old and tired. You gain clarity at your last moments, yet you never are able to defeat your own corruption. Maybe this time will be different. Maybe I will never have to rescue you again.
"Are you a part of me?"
Also, not that Pier was/is 001. "we" were 179.
We are all a part of you, John. But that doesn’t mean that we are the same. I am the third of your creations, I believe. I was the first to be cast away into the Graylands during your rebellion against Belief. You were the last, the 179th. And once I reach the Afterlands, I will again be sent back to the Field of Bodies as punishment.
You, however, do not remember, and your soul appears clean. They have limited memory themselves, and believe you only rebelled once. They will accept you back into their fold, especially once you complete what you are soon going to do...
But first, you must leave Tock behind. And to do so, you must get to the Nameless Tower.
