The bird laughs loudly.

"I see you are staring at my clock.  It's nothing really.  A family heirloom, nothing more."

John...

That feather that's falling might be useful.

Take it, along with the object at the base of the tree...

so it seems your title john is not just a title. you are also scavenger in the literal sense of the word. this vulture then should feel a sense of kinship with you. i also see a familiar item near the base of the tree. that clock hanging around that vultures neck still seems suspicious though. press further about the clock. you should also ask the date and time while your at it. if I'm right, the time you are given will match when you left, confirming we are indeed in the present.

Hello again, everyone.

*John reobtains His Prescription (Daily pill taken)

John tries to take the clock.

No.

Let's...not do that again.

*sigh*
"Fine, lead me out, clock man."

John follows the bird.

...

Two hours later...

Scavenger Bird:  "Why have you stopped?  We're almost there..."

John: "The bodies."

Scavenger Bird:

"A traveler may become lost, hungry, and tired.
They wander off the set paths, and then, they die.

It means more for us, Scavenger!  To feast upon death and decay.
We thrive on treachery, John.  The eternal lie inflicted upon others.
We have no need to work or fight.  We simply wait.  Only the failures try.  Only the losers trust.
Will you follow me further?"

But first John...

Examine the body for anything useful, and take the feathers.

((I'm tearing out my hair at this end.  At least it keeps the story Fun.  Most of the stuff that's happened was due to what the readers suggested.  I had no idea it would turn out this... disturbing.))

This.

Also, I find this story very deep-feeling, kinda like The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or Alice in Wonderland. Very good, and the visual style fits it.

Gentlemen, hello.  Lets get this party started!

John keeps walking along with the bird.

*Four hours later*

John:  "I... don't feel comfortable with this."

Bird: ...

John:  "We are going to the tower, aren't we?"

Bird:  "Heh... heh... Ha ha ha haha!"

*The scavenger birds all round start laughing horribly.  The clock-bird accosts John:

"The mounds, of bodies,
are of, your kin.
Behold! The inevitable fate.
That awaits, your kind.
Not death, not failure,
but insignificance.
One amongst billions of lost souls!
All are the same,
None are special.

So you rely on paranoia!
The intelligent ones go mad from fear.
You see scavengers behind every corner,
and are unconvinced of our existence.
You let us tear at you,
mislead you,
with your very own senses.
You trust us.  You are kind to us,
and in turn, we exploit you!

The truth is, that the truth is terrible.
There exists no future, no tower, no goal.
Our world is dead,
and you killed it.
We will forever feast upon your guilt.
Your failure.

Goodbye, little blind one.
For I have waited for you to die.
Listen to my poison,
And lie beneath red sky.
