Masters of the Star.
The 4X Bay12games Forum game.

Background:
The year is 2100 and the heavens have opened to humanity. The recent invention of ftl units have opened up a universe of possibilities to everyone who is willing to risk everything.
Spoiler: Sol system (click to show/hide)

YOU have the power to do good in the world. YOU have the ingenuity to start new worlds. YOU are the deciders. But, your not alone. There are others who will undercut, backstab, ally against you to make it to the top.

This is the game of interstellar exploring, expansion, exploiting and exterminating. Your taking over for the giants that have stood before you. The world is in crisis and the ftl units seem to be the worlds answer to everything. You will have to make sure this happens or there may be no future for humanity.

What it’s about.
Basically you are playing as a CEO or a head of some family with tendrils in every single pie. You’re an economic and political powerhouse, you represent everything that anyone would want to be. You have money, power and most importantly respect.
Its your job to explore the stars, open up new worlds for the people, allow them to flock to your lands and make you rich beyond your wildest dreams.
Expand into the unknown, make people want to come to your lands, offer tax havens, jobs, health care and education!
Exploit the exploitable, if its there for the taking, then do so. Nothings worse than a missed opportunity.
And exterminate your opposition. Do this in any way you see fit, whether direct confrontation, or more underhanded ways such as politics and economics.

What I want from this.

Basically I want to see if its possible for people to work together for the benefit of mankind. In this game you’ll be placed into it as a person of direct power and you will attempt to shape mankinds future. I want this to be as serious as possible please. If you can’t handle the heat then get out of the kitchen as they say. People will be allowed to be mean, so long as its in game only, I don’t want people getting annoyed at me for running this.

The rules:
  • I want all turns to be taken within a week in real life. I promise you as a GM that if you can all get the turns in by Wednesday of that week, I will have the next turn ready by Saturday.
  • Turns will last in game approximately 4 years a piece.
  • You can do as little or as much as you want in game.
  • I (or my fellow co-gm (to be announced)) will be playing as the general public and their governments.
  • You don’t have to worry about the little things in the corporation, it’s assumed that everything is done by itself.
  • Emergencies will occur, I will explain them to you in a PM or something. Not everyone will get ones at the same time, but there’s usually going to be one MAJOR emergency per turn. How you handle these will effect the game as a whole.

Organisation Creation.
How to go make one.
First I want you to take a serious long hard think about what your corporation does. Don't post these yet, I still have to finalise the rules.
Questions you should ask yourselves.

The name, all organisations MUST have a name.

What is it that your organisations specialise in? Politics or Economics?

Your corporations history. How did they get to where they are now?

Who is currently the CEO? You or some other figure head.

And one to keep to yourself. What are your long term goals? Economic power house through the invention of some really cool gadget? Eventual merger of all world governments? Can you get this through the UN and become its leader? Its up to you.

Current status of game: Not playing, testing idea out with you lot.

Current Organistations:

Spoiler:  Don't mind these (click to show/hide)

I would be interested in seeing if humans could, ahem, "work" together. But I had a different system by which to see if this would work. I should finish it and post it, altough, due to the forum game system, it must be very simple to do.

Nuclear war. I dunno. I'm not going to give a run down of every country heh. That'd take a looong time. But yeah. So servant corps your system would work with this idea? Maybe... a co-gm perhaps?

How about this one:

Starpower Industries
Although it does many things nowadays, it's main source of income is still fusion power in all it's forms. Although fission is still cheaper, fusion power is steadily replacing it because of the lowering availability of uranium. Starpower industries manufactures both hydrogen and helium based fusion reactors. It has massive, automated mining facilities on the moon to harvest the minuscule amounts of helium-3 there, but it will soon be obsolete since it's widely known that it plans to extract the element from the gas giants of the solar system; something that became economically feasible with the invention of FTL drives eliminating the months of travel time required. Their recent efforts have been branching into the construction of commercial FTL drive units.

Is this the sort of thing you're looking for?

Terra-Form United
Formed by a wish form a dying rich man, and the universal facination with space, Terra-Form United seeks to make a new home from the ashes of earth. It's goals include:
1. Make hospitible colonies on the Marsian planet
2. Use Mars as a jump-off point to reach the Astroid Belt, and any riches might be there
3. Present the idea of 'A new Earth' to the public, with positive results and lots of funding

We may accomplish these goals in the following order: 3, 1, 2.
We focus mainly on the political sway of big super-powers to back us up with personell, research rights, and funding... oh yes, funding. Then, with our vision firmly in place, we will look even higher to the stars, and the riches beyond them.

I will be the CEO.

Seems to me he wants something more like this:

GaiaCorp
Founded in 2021 by John Robinson, GaiaCorp is a company specializing in creating equipment designed to withstand extreme conditions, and has recently become something of a household name in the extra-solar colonization effort. Although their early history was not particularly notable, the company caught the public eye after being chosen to provide the equipment for the Martian research bases. Many wonder how a previously-unnoticeable company was chosen for one of the most prestigious operations of the 21st century. Although many rumors of underhanded dealings, murder and blackmail were thrown back and forth, the truth remains unknown to this day. With the discovery of FTL the company has shifted all of it's efforts into colonization and terraforming technology, which combined with its prior experiences enabled it to quickly gain the lead in the colonization and exploitation of worlds with extreme conditions. On a lighter note, there have been many conspiracy theories about it's dealings on Mars, most of them centered around the idea of a gigantic base hidden under it's icecaps. When the Current CEO: Stanley Boone (as played my yours truly), was questioned on it, he was reported to break down in hysterical laughter. After regaining his composure he was reported to say: "I wish."

Those are all great ideas. Yeah basically I'll be allowing max 5 people to play. this is just a test to see how it goes, I need to first make stats and all that Jazz. Any ideas for what I could use?
My current idea is.
Public appeal - Determines how much the public respect/like/dislike/treat you like trash? Stuff like you have some film stars endorse you, people will like you. Build some hospitals, people will like you. Dump your nuclear waste in their backgarden people will hate you.
Government appeal - Determines how much the governments like you (bribing... etc.)
Money - Determine show much money you have... basically. This effects mostly everything. So its fairly important.
Politiking (the art of politics) The higher this the better chance you have of getting deals and stuff through with opponents or governments.
Research - Will determine how well your research teams get on. The higher the more likely they are to get lucky and stumble across a neat idea or something. Of course, there will be other people on earth or somewhere researching things who arn't in your corps. This stat could influence them to join you.
Government appeal
Manufacturing capability - How good your industries are at making stuff. Get your new technologies of the production lines quicker.

Hm. Good point. Of course that opens up a whole new world of opportunities, including stocks, supply and demand, we could even negotiate with other companies (300 units of Helium-3 for 250 units of steel, or say, a technology).

Good ideas. Yup, thats what im hoping you lot would do by yourselves :D But I don't want to make it more complicated than it is.

Edit: How long do you think the turns should be? I'm beginning to wonder if 2 years would be better than 4.

My system isn't exactly as developed as I would like it to be, so I may have to use the "Rise of Civilization" game in order to help develop it.

What would occur is that each player control their own nation who belong to the united Confederacy. The Confederacy is pretty weak, and is only as strong as the Players wish it to be. Players can even decide to leave the Confederacy if they so desire. There is three ways to win:
1) Get 35 Prestige Points.
2) If you are in the Confederacy, compel all nations within the Confederacy) to believe in their "Social Values" (Social Values include 'democracy'/'tyranny', 'freedom'/near-slavery, etc.).
3) If you are outside of the Confederacy, take over Terra. This will disband the Confederacy and make you the new galactic power.
