FF 7 + DF?
« on: April 11, 2009, 03:13:26 pm »

I would've posted this in VN... But it's just an amusing story that I'd like to share and some thoughts.

I've been playing Final Fantasy 7 (for the first time!) on my computer through an emulator. Works great. Then I came to the safe where you have to carefully enter the 4 numbers within 20 seconds. Tried, tried, and tried some more. Then I noticed that the 20 second timer seemed to be going awfully fast.

After a little looking for settings in the emulator and thinking, I decided to force the emulator to lag so I could actually get into the safe. And what program do we all know of that eats processor time like crazy? Dwarf Fortress of course! So with 2 copies of DF running at the title screen in the background, I cracked the safe open. Closed the DFs, crushed the boss, and grabbed my loot.

Sure, it was a little cheaty, but I swear that timer was running faster than it should.

For the fellow FF7 players:
I'm still on disk one, just got the little bronco (or whatever it's called, the plane-turned-boat) and am looking for the keystone. I know where it is, just haven't gone there yet.

For any emulator geeks:
I'm using ePSXe and an Logitec-brand Xbox360 controler with "Chill-Stream".

And if you haven't played FF7, you should. I haven't played too many RPGs and this is the first FF game that i've played, but it's a lot of fun. And the summons look awesome despite the low (by today's standards) polygon count.

Hmm... this might should be in Other Games...

That timer does go fast, ps1 games are like old dos games that way.

Ah, Final Fantasy 7, brings back memories of sitting in my room for 3 hours straight, doing nothing but fighting to get Omnislash, and spending hours breeding the Gold Chocobo... good times. I definetly remember the safe, I have FF7 for the PS2, so I couldn't do any cheating like that, and it took me about two hours to get that damn thing open... wouldn't have been so bad, but I underestimated the power surge he gets when you kill half of him... last time I assumed I was ready for anything.

So, since I must know, what party do you use, or rotate between, what level is everyone, and how much background knowledge do you have of final fantasy? (Last one, things like if I mentioned Cloud or Sephiroth, you would know who they were instantly, and could telll me about how pure awesome they are.) If you have any questions feel free to ask, I've played through it 3 times, and gotten most of the endgame secrets.

Pfft. Why use two title screens when you can use one 200 dwarf fort with magmafalls and an ongoing catsplosion?

Good game.

Pity about the horrible enemy design though...

Pity about the horrible character design in general though...

3 hours? that'd be a short play session for me, i usually don't start it unless i've got at least 3 hrs to waste... er, play. Haven't startrd on the chocobo catching/breeding.

lesse... Cloud's about lv 39 or 40 mose everyone else is in the 30s. Aeris is the lowest at 33, haven't used her much. until i got Vincent i'd been using Tiffa and Yuffie, but now i've switched to Barret and Vincent. Red's cool, but haven't used him much. Don't care for Cait. Just got Cid, haven't used him yet.

I've known about Cloud and Sephiroth for a long time. (Watched my cousin play the game when i was much younger.) I know they are widely considered to be awesome, but haven't yet formed much of an opinion myself yet. (First time through and still on disk one.) Cloud's cool, but i really like Barret's gun arm. So far Sephiroth's just mysterious.

Endgame secrets? No spoilers please, but any tips for getting them? Or should I finish it normally first?

Also: Midgar Zolom. I can eat that guy for breakfast now. So much so that I haven't managed to get the Beta Enemy Skill from it yet. Admittedly, i haven't tried that hard yet.

For playing FF7, or the creative cheating? ;D

Unfortunately, i don't have such an awesome fort... :( I may have had 200 dwarves at one time, not sure if i had that many. Short attention span.

What's horrible about the enemy/character design? Sure it's dated now, but wasn't it good for the time? (I wasn't into gaming yet back then.)

I also don't remember anything particularly horrible about the enemy design, but it has been a long time since I played.

It's a good game. My favorite other than VI.

Breed the chocobo, all else will come to you my friend.

I think that's an excellent level, and I highly support the choice of Cloud, Barret, and Vincent as your party, as that was mine, and it got me through many a fight. (Cloud being the utter beast of course, and Barret and Vincent were the best choices out of the others, due to the fact they used ranged weapons, and their Limits are pwnage)

So, 3 hours is short for you huh? I admire someone that can bull rush through their first playthrough, that's the way it's done, learn the general overlay, then redo, looking at guides and whatnot to ensure maximum secret finding. If I may ask, how many days old is this file? (When did you start it?) I beat FF7 first time through within a week hehe :P

Beleive me, Cloud and Sephiroth are the greatest swordsmen ever, and there is none who can hope to be their equal. This is how it shall always be... If you don't beleive me, watch the FF7 movie, Advent Children, and you will see what I mean.

The graphics acutally were fairly good for back then I beleive, and honestly you can't compare it to today's graphics becuase it's like over 10 years old, and, you made that post on a forum for an ASCII game... do graphics matter that much to you?

As impressed as I am by your computer throttling resourcefulness, why are you playing FF7 with an emulator at all?  There was a PC version of it, released in like 1999.

If you're playing with an emulator then i think there should be some simple way of lowering game-speed.

Also...

I think Squall could also go along with the list of great FF swordsmen, definitely not because of his character, but due to the fact that you can defeat almost any boss by Junctioning 99 Ultima to Attack and having him Limit Break repeatedly.

When I played it back in the day, my two most frequently used characters after Cloud were Vincent and Yuffie. Vincent because his limit breaks are potentially the most useful if you can unlock the best one, Yuffie because of something to do with her best weapon or something, I don't quite remember. Suffice it to say, I was quite good at maxing things out legitimately.

@Yaaga: WAIT! I didn't mean 3 hours for a run throught the entire game, i meant 3 hours of playing in one sitting. I downloaded it the week before christmas iirc. Only accumilated about 25-30 hours of play time, though. And watching Advent Children is what really got me interested in playing the game.

@Aqizzar: I recall seeing something about the PC version, but couldn't find it free anywhere. Besides, I might decide to grab more psx games at some point.

@Myroc: I looked but couldn't find a setting for that. Not much experience with emulators.

EDIT: Is it odd that I feel compelled to respond to everyone? I've never really noticed anyone else do that.
