Captive Giant Cave Spiders?
« on: April 10, 2009, 04:01:39 pm »

Supposing I caught a giant cave spider in a wooden cage...

1. Will it stay in the cage or break out?
2. Do captive GCS's still produce webbing/silk?

Any tips on how to catch the big bugger? (I just lost my woodcutter a season in to the game from the monstrosity.

3.Slowly lure it with the peasants
4.Cage

2. as far as I know, tame ones won't do it, but you can set up some methods, I believe it's been mentioned under silk farming or some such a few times in forum.

All the attempts I've seen of people trying to get silk from GCSes involves releasing them from the cage, giving them a target that they can successfully path to, and then recatching them before they reach the target (or just letting the target die, I suppose).

Basically, build the cage at one end of a room.  Build a chain at the other.  Attach an animal to the chain.  Create a row of cage traps in front of the chain that crosses the whole room.  (That is, there is no way to get from the GCS cage to the chained bait without crossing a cage trap.)  Hook the GCS cage to a lever in another room.  Pull the lever, releasing the GCS.  Watch the GCS approach and web at the bait.  Watch it run into the cage trap row.  Collect silk.  Rebuild cage, re-attach to lever, repeat process as desired.

I think its something like this, although I might be wrong:

---------------
-                  ---------
-         S              F   cX
-                  ----------
---------------

-=Wall
S=Spider
F=Fortification
c=cat
X-Chain for cat

I think the spider sees cat, shoots web, that hits the fortification. Thats how it might be done, i think.

I've seen an method that basically surrounds the critter with fortification, and a door that's set to tightly closed ( a glitch with pathing algothirms not catching that animals can't go through tightly closed doors )

Just in time too. My entire fortress was wiped out by it.  ???
Couldn't forbid the caught dwarves stuff fast enough.

Why is GCS silk so desirable to go to all this trouble?  Other than its high value that is.

Well the process is complicated, unnecessary and incredibly dangerous...

It's a dwarf thing. You wouldn't understand.

Nah, I get that it's a dwarfish thing.  I build mega projects after all.
Just thought there might be some benefits I don't know about.

Well .. there IS a certain charm in feeding nobles to the giant spider. If it attacks goblins it can become a cool defense mechanism too.

Considering that what you get is an infinite supply of high-price silk, I'd say the difficulty isn't so bad.

Your pig-tail farmers will probably start feeling insecure though.

I'm curious, would it be possible to get a GCS onto a chain? Would it involve whoever chains it up getting horribly mangled in the process? Also, say I dropped unarmed goblins/kittens on the thing to get it to throw web at stuff: if I had the GCS on it's own "island" platform so it couldn't path to the sides of the room due to a trench, would I be able to collect the webs readily without my collectors getting webbed themselves? Finally, if it's on a chain, does it still think it can path to enemies and web them? Would this set-up work at all?

You won't be able to get a GCS on a chain unless it is tame. Chained animals do not think they have path to enemies outside of the reach of their chain anyway.
