Actually, I'm sure ships are allowed to carry firearms for defense. Just not mounted cannons.

My first guess is most crews just don't want to turn a hijack attempt into a fight to the death just to save their employer some ransom money.
This.

One of my teachers last year was the First Mate on various transport ships, he said they only carried about $10-20 000AUD in the ships safe.

And it was insured.

Quote
How could they arm their ships? I'm fairly sure that it's against most international law.
nm, some have been escorted by the navy recently.

Quote
Bullshit about them affecting Somalia positively, sure they bring in one million everyone now and again but it isn't helping Somalia, at all.
Oh its more then that, and in a poor country like Somalia it all counts.

Quote
They attacks ships bringing food aid to Somalia and surrounding countries
Yes, and with the loot they steal many people can afford their own food.

Quote
and drives Somalia deeper, and deeper into lawlessness.
Thats fine, their lives are better.

Quote
Sure they're getting more money, but that is only in the short term.
Its helping people, and as long as piracy stays there will be money for them.
Quote
The money for long term infrastructure and services is being waster on more guns and more boats.
Yeah, you have to spend money to make money. But it is better they spend it on something that acctualy makes a diffrence anyway.

Quote
Then there is the nasty business of the high possibility of being killed by various military forces.
And the pirates are the bad guys here? They have stolen money, these guys are going to come in and kill tons of people for it.

Quote
Attacking cruise liners and yachts is helping the third world?
Yes, they are helping, yachts and cruise liners are worth alot of money. Much more then "one million everyone now and again"

Quote
Please. These pirates aren't attacking a countries ships, they're attacking ships the belong to multi-national corporations, hardly a powerful nation.

I know the united states and france have hunted pirates, and pirates have attacked a indian warship some time ago from what I've read.

Its not like they wouldent get attacked by other countrys, I dont expect anyone to turn a blind eye on pirates. Im not really mad at them either, its their job.

Quote
They help out too little to justify their actions towards innocent workers.
They dont kill them, how does that sound? The "innocent workers" are just a bargaining chip, the pirates themselves are in more danger then the workers anyway.

Quote
I think cowofdoom is arguing for the sake of argument here.
No, I think that pirates are being demonized unjustly by people. Probably becuase of the overwhelming amount of negative media against them. They arent even close to being as evil as they are shown.

Quote
My first guess is most crews just don't want to turn a hijack attempt into a fight to the death just to save their employer some ransom money.
The soldiers sure do.

Oh and one other thing Jon, what about the illigal(noted for the fact you hold this of great importance) polution of the somalian waters? I see you dont have any moral qualm about poisioning a third world countrys waters but when a few yachts go down its terrorism?

Cow.

I'm calling bullshit, pull up some sources for all this. Because frankly, it looks like your pulling all this shit from your arse.

About the illegal pollution.

It's up to the government to prevent this, Pirates operating out of countries are preventing these countries to gain a democratic government, to stop this.

EDIT:

Oh and by the way Cow, the lawlessness in Somalia and other countries does not make their lives better, well it does for the people that profit from lawlessness (drug makers, arms dealers etc.), but the average person there, living in abject poverty get attacked in this state of lawlessness for no reason other than they were born in a different village!

Frankly Cow, you have shown ZERO empathy towards annoying victimized by the pirates. Other than the pirates who are gaining from this.

Oh. And how could I resist this?

'Demonised'

Question Cow, you seem to say that pirates are just the average person out to make a dollar. Well if that is that case, how did they get weapons in the first place? And boats? They certainly couldn't start piracy on their dollar-a-day wage they make.

EDIT2:

According to Cow, these are the 'Good Guys'
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I don't see it.

I still think he's either arguing for the sake of arguing, or he somehow thinks he's being cool by rooting for the "little guy" even though in this situation the workers on the ships would be the little guy.

Although I already stated that I have little place in this conversation, I think the point he's trying to make is that the pirates are somewhat justified in their actions because of their miserable situation, so they shouldn't be looked down upon for doing what it takes to survive.

Their part of the problem, not the solution.

At this point I cant help but to say this is ignorant. Even if they did do that it would still take years to set up a working government. What the companys did was wrong, the pirates who captured those ships are the heros here.

Quote

Never said it did.

Quote
Frankly Cow, you have shown ZERO empathy towards annoying victimized by the pirates. Other than the pirates who are gaining from this.
Empathy isent needed towards the victims of the pirates that are kidnapped, their not being tortured or killed. I guess it takes some time for them to be released, but thats just a temporary discomfort, they are treated well.

Vegabond fishermen or sailors usualy have a boat from their job, guns are bought from dealers on debt.

I've heard this before. Im rooting for the "little guy" becuase what their doing is right, and I feel is justified. Not becuase Im trying to get respect from anyone.

Yeah, nothing like being held for ransom under threat of death, quite the inconvenience I'm sure.

And how dare those companies try to transport goods in order to make a profit.  Money is evil and we should all live on farms.

How is that relevant at all?
