12th Granite, Year 64
A caravan of elves showed up today. Maybe its not so bad that out kitchen and butcher's workshop are outdoors. I've slimmed the number of those yappy little runts running around, and the look on those pointy eared ponces' faces was priceless when they caught sight of those puppy-skins drying in the sun. I'll have to remember to carry the design over once I get around to setting up a depot down at the new site.

I had old Hillabura "trade" with them, he took some of that piddly tree sap they call booze of their hands. I wouldn't bring myself to drink the stuff, but its as good as free anyway. He did manage to get them to part with the biggest damn cat I've ever seen though. I imagine it'll do something to keep the monkeys away if we chain it up by the bridge at the new site.

Speaking of which, work is going well converting that tube. We've yet to clear out any housing, but there's room for farms and some workshops now. I have to hand it to my predecessor, he's got an eye for this sort of thing. I'm hesitant to carve the place out too heavily, the nice circular halls are a welcome departure from the norm. They do make spacing out workshops rather difficult though.

1st Felsite, Year 64
Work goes slowly. We have room for everything we need now, but hauling everything over has been a daunting task, thanks in no small way to the great piles of  mugs and other trifles our craftsdwarf Sazir has been piling up. You never have to tell him to get working twice, I imagine his vision of heaven is an endless pile of stones and a good chisel. I've seen him working his hands over dreamed stones in his sleep.
Hopefully I won't have to any more. I've ordered a shaft mine straight through the center of the tube, with quarters dug out at its base. Once the project is complete we'll have room for more than twice our number.
More workers would speed up work immensely. Hopefully our efforts will attract migrants by the summer.

Hah hah! Praise be to Meng and the glory of the Fortress! My prayers are answered in just one week! No less than twenty one able bodied dwarves have made the trek out to us. They'll be welcome as long as they're willing to pull their weight. Which may be harder for some than others. I don't know how much cheese some of them were expecting to be making out here, but they'll probably be disappointed. I'm sure we can find something useful for them to do though.

A couple of the migrants reported seeing a fearsome giant eagle on their way here, but the creature is nowhere to be found. Once the they've been organized into new jobs, I'll see if a few can be spared to patrol the area for the eagle and other dangerous creatures. Our increased numbers will only draw more attention from the thieving kobolds and other, more dangerous, savages.

Maybe I underestimated the uselessness of some of our new "workers." One of their number, a skill-less peasant named Mebzuth Udilnazon, has come...unhinged. He's holed himself up in one of the workshops, whispering who knows what to himself. He's working on something, but he won't let anyone see what he's up to. Thikut said he saw him drop a table he was hauling from the old site in the middle of the field before he charged in and took the shop. I've been asking around and it seems that he doesn't have any close friends, and I can't blame any of them with the way he acts. He nearly bit my finger off when I went in to suggest that he spend his time doing something more useful. I figure for now the safest thing to do it let him be. But I swear to Meng, if he causes any more trouble in the future, he'll be "volunteered" to deal with that eagle.

Actually, my laptop burped, but fortunately it had autosaved right when the migrants showed up. I'm gunna give it a rest for now. I'll pick it back up either later on tonight or tomorrow.

Nah, I'm all good. Some Happenings happened yesterday (old friend came back into town, had to party like rockstars, invent Action News Squad, etc), so I never got around to any dorfing. I don't have all that much time today, but I should have enough for two or three updates...
(It takes quite a bit to pull off a rhetorical ellipsis, but I think I've got it.)

Meng preserve us. Sibrek... Sibrek has always been the most level headed of us. She seemed a bit distant for the past few days, but nothing could have prepared me for this. Her eyes are glazed over. She constantly speaks in some language none of us have ever heard. She refuses food and drink. I have heard stories of this before, they say that out in the wild, without the sheltering ceilings of the Mountainhome above them, strange visions can force themselves into a dwarf's head. They say that these moods end in either splendor, or madness. I pray that I will not lose her.

2nd Hematite
Sibrek has finally come to. She came stumbling out of the workshop she'd holed herself up in, carrying the most beautiful shield I've ever seen. I didn't know she had it in her. Neither did she. She can't remember anything of the past two weeks, but she knows that its name is Ginglaven. We can't explain any of it. Whether this is a blessing or an ill omen I'm not sure. But I'm grateful to have her back.

Ineth, a miner who showed up with the rest of the migrants, was attacked by a pack of wolves. One got its jaw around his leg, nearly crushing the bone. It only let go when he put his pick through its lung. He's earned himself some time to rest, but I'll have to organize a party to bring the rest of the pack to heel.

15th Hematite
Human caravan arrived today. We haven't yet dismantled the old depot, but we haven't bothered to haul any of those bins of mugs around either, so it worked out. I wonder what they'll do with them all. I know they don't drink the proper way, straight from the barrel, but they can't need more than one of them each, can they? Anyway, Hillburra got them to take them off our hands for a fair stack of  meat, a few metal bars, and some shields and weaponry. I've had one of the migrants make a few crossbows and given them to some of the less skilled of their number. Hopefully they'll prove themselves useful.

25th Hematite
By the time we got around to hunting the wolves down, they had already moved on. I went in for a drink, but the marksdwarves-in-training stuck around a while to try out their new toys on some marmots. I don't think any of them had ever fired a crossbow before. The experience was apparently too much for Atir, who passed out at the sight of blood.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(I just noticed the Avast! popup but I don't feel like taking another screenshot. IMMERSION:BROKEN.)
Hillburra had a talk with the trade guild representative, requested cartloads of strawberries, and immediately fell asleep. We don't have any pressing needs, so its not much of a problem, but I'm beginning to wonder about him.

Bonus Late-Night Update!

4th Limestone
Summer has passed quickly and largely uneventfully. I've had Atir (who has proven to be quite a competent military leader, despite his initial reluctance) and his dwarves set up a yard to practice their aim. They said that they'd found the giant eagle, but that it flew off after they put a few bolts into it. Its a shame to let a trophy like that just fly away, but at least it won't be harassing us.
I had some of the peasant migrants pressed into mining, they've managed to dig out another level of sleeping quarters and a dining hall. I've planned out an expansion to the top level of the shaft, it'll give us more room for workshops and storage in the future. Some of it could even be convereted to more farming space, if needed.
The puppies have all grown up by now, I think I'll have them trained to follow Atir's squad. I'm tired of tripping over them in the halls.

20th Limestone
Its been a taxing few days. A caravan from the Mountainhome came, just as Thikut was demolishing the depot at the old site. There was a bit of a scurry to get a new one set up and gather up the last of the trade goods. At the same time, Sazir got himself worked up into some sort of frenzy, storming around shouting about how he needed bones for "Otilelis Gazot Kizbiz," which it turns out is some sort of amulet he saw in a vision. The whole experience seems to have turned him into some sort of super-dwarven stonecrafter. Sibrek seems jealous.
Anyway, the traders didn't bring much, but we got a few bins of leather and silk. I think I'll tell Hillburra to request some coal, I've seen veins of ore sticking out of some of the hills, but never any coal.

23rd Sandstone
I swear to Meng, the next time one of these wood-for-brains tells me he can't keep on digging because of wet stone, I'll have him flogged.
Everything else is fine.

1st Timber
It seems that you get more thieves in autumn. Maybe they're looking at their larders and realizing they won't have enough for winter. Kobolds have been showing up in bands of two or three, as of yet none of them have even made it over our bridge. I've had Atir's squad sent out to patrol the perimeter. Maybe whoever runs the show in their caves will take the hint when the skulking filth they send out to us stop coming back.

20th Timber
More migrants arrived this week, eight this time. None of them have any particularly useful skills aside from a fish cleaner and a peasant who spends his idle time fishing. They're doing their part to fill our stockpiles, so they're a notch above the rest of them. With Sazir sitting in his workshop filling bin after bin with masterful mugs, we don't have any use for yet another bone- or wood-carver aside from another set of legs to haul with. We'll take what we're given though.
One of their number, Rith, is an odd sort. Nobody really ever sees here aside from when she's hauling dead wolves to the butchers. She's useful, but a bit eerie.

26th Moonstone
Rith spotted a pack of dark gnomes in the north! Atir's squad was distpatched to deal with them. They're harmless, the tiny things, but mischevious and quick. They've been having a bit of fun chasing them around the hills.
About the same time, that fisherdwarf Nish took over a crafts workshop. He's exactly like Sibrek was, but he's got a bit of stone in there with him and he seems happy about it, so no worries.
Me and the miners unearthed a veins of galena and a cluster of native aluminum in the lowest level today. There's a pair of furnace operators who've been skulking about since they got here. Their eyes lit up when they heard about, but they went right back to moping when they realized we have no coal.

8th Opal
Nish emerged today, carrying a toy boat. Its nice, I guess. For a boat.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Well, with his year almost over, I'm thinking of taking a break from this whole leadership thing. It was just a fluke, really, and I bet someone among these thirty or so dwarves here could do a better job of it than me. We've been keeping on alright, but there's been no excitement. I think once spring comes around I'll hand it off to someone who can shake things up around here.

1st Granite, Year 65
Alright, one year is long enough. I guess we'll put it up to a vote as to who gets to give the orders now.
As a parting gift to my successor, I mined our a vein of iron ore. Hopefully they'll put it to good use. We haven't run into any trouble with goblins so far, but I'll bet that we'll be getting some on our doorstep within the year. Besides, I've had this pick in my hands for two years now, I'd like to see if I can still manage a smith's hammer. It's been a good year though. I wish the best of luck to the next to lead.

Cloistergulf, as it stands in the year 65:

I played this one kind of safe, as it was my first succession and all, so there's no KILLER DEATH LEVERS to point out or anything. Engy, its on you now to make the FUN happen.
