I had some in an old fort, ended up modding the raws to make War Elephants! It was fun :D

Child:10 is I think what that means. 10 years
To be fair, they can potentially live until they're 70, whereas many other animals will die of old age before they're 20. Despite taking so long to grow up, though, they're actually still pretty good for livestock farming as long as you have enough of them. You see, the young of animals provide 60% of the bones, meat and stuff of the adult version. Elephants are size 16, so adults give 16 bones and meat, and children give 9 (rounded down). As such, elephant calves provide as many resources as an adult horse or cow (the largest creatures you can embark with), and with elephant calves you don't have to wait a year for all 9 - you can slaughter them as soon as you get the message that they've been born, and they don't even have the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag so the elephants can and will pop them out three or four at a time :)

I set cows as [trainable] and it didn't seem to do anything. Are there any other tags I need to add?

[trAINABLE] is all you need to add, once they are tame you can just tell the kennels to train a war dog, after choosing it the job will be "Train War Animal" :)

You will need to be sure that the elephant is an adult, and out of a cage/not chained. Also to get just the elephant trained besure to lock up all your other trainable animals.

That reminds me, I now have a rather nice population of tame blackbears growing up in my fortress.  Does anyone know if they will attack enemies like dogs do, or would i have to edit the raws and change them?

Plus how could you not want little baby blackbears running around your fortress look at these things: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bic9uqIyzyQ&NR=1

Add [TRAINABLE] to the bear's raws and that should do the trick (whether you make them into war bears or not) :) Any pets will attack an enemy that just happens to walk into or beside their tile, but dogs are the only pet to autonomously chase enemies.

I'm pretty new to modding so this is a bit of a noob question:
Do I have to save then reload the game if i change the raws, or can i keep running it while i change things?

I thought that some civs can embark with camels which are size 10. But elephants have a higher modvalue and the wholesale slaughter of children is a grand dwarven tradition stretching back to before the age of myths...

When I am feeling generous I will give myself three camels on embark, I like bolts...

There must be a way to get the butchers to cut meat with serrated disks instead of cleaverstheir bare handswhole buildings, the lack of severed limbs really cuts down on crossbow production...

Yes, you have to save the game->quit the game->change the raws->start the game again.
This isn't always possible with every change so will sometimes have to gen a new world to get the affects of certain mods. Making a pet trainable does not require a re-gen.(There's already a thread about what types of mods require a world re-gen)
