Are you REALLY concerned about the health of a dwarf?

You could just light the bolt first, then have them fire it. I suggest dropping a single unit of magma onto a ballista bolt lying on a grate.
I'm not sure if it would stay lit after being fired, though.
Time to learn the nobles how to fire the ballista. Oh, and cats.

Isn't that dangerous for the dwarf who will fire the balista?  ;D

When life cycles are implanted, you will too. How many Dwarven children do you have compared to migrants? Depopulate the species and see what happens!

Are you kidding? just lock 2 or 3 married couples up somewhere safe and they will rapidly churn out enough children to keep the experiments going forever.

What if you were to make a magma waterfall, and shoot the ballista arrow out through that? That way the arrow would pass through the magma and ignite.

Actually, this would also work with the catapult i think?

I don't think it would work with rocks, it takes a while for them to melt so it seems unlikely that they would melt during the small time they were in the magma/magma mist.

Use wood?

Also in future versions you should be able to soak cloth in dwarven booze and either make a molotov cocktail or attach it to arrows or ballista arrows.

How about a "FUCK THE UNIVERSE" lever? Use both magma and water! Encase the world in obsidian!

IŽd rather have booze as a liquid, witch you can flood the world with.

Then add magma.

needs more blood

Also, blood should be fermentable to give "Armok's Special Brew" or something.

So, did anybody try that by now? Somebody oughta have one of those crazy "build fortress out of natural obsidian" projects going, could they please quickly test that  ;D

Oh btw, if you encase living beings in ice and then mine the ice, you can recover the bodies and items, right?

Is that possible with obsidian? Because if yes, I will sneeze on all future "natural obsidian towers" if they arent encasing elves on all tiles.

I will settle for dwarven corpses, in a pinch.

Surely all such constructions have an elven trading party buried alive in the foundations as a matter of course anyway?

It's been a while since I got to play with magma, I think tonight will see some worldgenning in an attempt to find a suitably interesting place with a magma vent. :)
