I almost agree.  If anything, I think it doesn't go far enough.

To me, all the understanding and mea culpas flying about demonstrate that everyone already knew what they were doing was offensively idiotic, if not actually breaking rules.  That the omgwar yuri vs lolcat threads persisted at all tells me you guys didn't care that it wasn't acceptable or genuinely allowable.

Well, that is true, however you forgot about something:
Urist Newuser registers on the forum.
Urist Newuser visits the VN subforum.
Urist Newuser begins to think "WTF IS GOING ON HERE?!".

I think that the VN subforum [actually it's "spammish" content to be more specific] has lowered the quality of the whole forum. That was the problem. Like I've said, the VN subforum should be reopened one day, but Toady must set up some rules.

When the splitting occured, I presumed that VN would be like this forum is now, and this forum would be for formal debate on politics and stuff, so I thought GD would be a mostly dead forum. Unfortunately, I was very much wrong. Anyway, as GD is now fulfilling VN's original purpose, I see no reason to ever reopen VN. It should be left to stand as a warning for the future posters, and an albatross around the necks of those responsible.

Lack of rules was not the problem, and more rules is not a solution.  Whenever you create a designated garbage zone, it will fill with garbage, and the stink and flies will soon begin spreading.
