I'm not sure what to think of this new development. It seems to me that it's been long in coming. Sure, the porn was the tipping point, but you guys have to admit that the nonsense was getting far out of hand. Then again, such nonsense definitely isn't new, and I participated in it a few times, so I too am at fault here. Heck, I remember a spam/nonsense topic that I accidentally started in the modding forum (this was long before we could lock topics), and that was over a year ago. Various nonsense became, in essence, its name, though that was not the intention of the board.
This type of thread, this is what the Bay 12 forum is all about. People getting together to discuss various issues and debate on different topics. There may be a little anger, but more importantly there's intelligent conversation. It would be nice if all the internet was like this, but unfortunately, there's a lot of fools out there. I'm not only talking about the trolls, though. Nor even those who started the nonsense. We who sat back and tolerated this are also a part of the problem. Sure, I avoided the various nonsense board, but turning a blind eye just allows foolishness to continue and spread. "Rebuke the fool, that he might see the error of his ways." All of us are at fault.
This thread, however, seems to show that we all see the error of our ways, and are on a course towards intelligence and sophistication. Let's not let this happen again. Let us refrain from nonsense, and gently correct those newcomers who may not be used to such a situation. Let us turn away from our dark past into a new and glorious future of reason and Dwarf Fortress. For the good of the Forum, and for the Great Toad!
Edit: And yes, the forum does seem to be moving slowly for some reason.
