No, I had nothing to do with this.  I came on to the boards this morning and went bug-eyed when I saw this thread poking up out of General Discussion.

I must admit to rather piss-poor timing on my part however, as I can quite clearly see how I might be suspected in something like this.  But I expressed my thoughts to Toady a long, long time ago, and felt I'd said my piece then.  No point in bringing it up again just for the sake of making a big deal out of it.

Not to mention the fact that, as I stated a few times, I had no intention of changing the boards here.  I honestly meant that.


I'm actually not quite sure how I feel about this.  I suppose there's not much to be done aside from, as Jackrabbit said, see how people deal with it.  The wisdom of this decision will make itself apparent with time.


And Toady, last time I sent you a moderation ping was before the split, if I remember correctly.

The best way is to keep the VN boards locked for the foreseeable future. If we had a means for the forum regulars (i.e. those with a large amount of posts) to vote for threads, maybe we could use that to automatically filter out useless threads in VN, and have it reopen when the next release hits - presumably that will reduce the amount of random posters in VN, switching the heated discussions back to gameplay questions, bug reports, and modding.

Or, alternatively, just warn everyone who wants to back up anything (or move threads or whatever), and nuke the whole thing as part of the celebration fireworks for the next version's release.

As long as we're being all goody-goody, I should admit that after reading Akroma's post, I was about to fire off a vitriolic indictment of my own.  As Kagus admits, the timing was pretty amazing.  But I thought, "This will accomplish nothing besides making me look like a vindictive ass," so I dropped it, refreshed the page, and saw Toady's new post absolving anyone of forcing his hand.  That's one thing I've got no problem being wrong about.

Perhaps the locking should only last until the next version, that way all the random posters will be distracted and won't post things that break the rules and aggravate people.
