Arrow Trap
« on: April 08, 2009, 07:47:00 pm »

I'm trying to reconstruct the chamber of traps from Raiders of the Lost Ark, but there don't seem to be any kind of arrow-shooting wall traps. I could put Marksdwarves behind a fortification, but that just doesn't feel the same. Is it possible that some kind of arrow trap could be added in the future?

Crossbows in a trap are basically what you're looking for, however they only shoot on the same tile that they're on, and they need to be reloaded, so if you're fine with that then problem solved. :)

I would like if a crossbow/generic launcher can be implemented similar to the ballista.  Where the trigger of a pressure trap sets off the trap, which fire a bolt or a generic object.

Reason why I want a generic launcher?  Corridor of Flying Spear.  And...

Chamber of Flying Caged Kittens
Cages containing kittens gets fired.  Upon impacting the floor/wall, the cage can be set to break open on impact, spilling kittens all over the enemy.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

It's not possible to setup a ballista as a trap, is it..?

Not yet, but that would make them immensely more useful.

I like the idea of trap crossbows being able to fire in a direction. They would be twice as slow as a person wielding the weapon, but with enough you can make an automated Indiana Jones trap.

 All we need are boulders...

You could make a hatches holding back magma which is above the passage and water to the side behind doors so that as the dwarf runs away it opens hatches of magma and doors of water that create obsidian blocks consuming anything that is in its path.

Everything here is on the list of trap ideas I want implemented. Right up there with multitile traps, traps built into walls that do damage one or two spaces to the side and can be reloaded from the -other- side of the wall, snare traps that provide the GCS webbing effect at the cost of one net, and other such fun things.

I wonder if we should compile a list.

However, it should be really easy to mod in a machine gun trap by taking the code from the arrow/crosbow trap. Or a grenade launcher trap.

Or try FUBAR! The best chocolate bar ever!
And you can't eat them, either, sadly. Even though it'd make sieges so much more fun; dwarves lining the walls, drooling and carrying sharp knives and forks, ready for the upcoming meals.

You go ahead and do that. I doubt anyone else wants it implemented.

Since we're talking about Indiana Jones and we have poisons coming up ... a trap that releases large quantities of venomous cave spiders at the attackers could be fun and an EXTREME hazard to the rest of the fortress. Hope you've stocked up on cats!

Speaking of Indiana Jones and traps, where is my large boulder thatcan be put rolling? I wanna start bowling with gobbos.

I was actually thinking it: Trap would need a boulder (found naturally/made from stone), and trigger preshure plate.
The stone would start rolling in the direction defined at the setup, and would move a defined distance (5 squares? 10?). Effectively, it would have movement, and each square moved would reduce movement by 1. When movement ends, the boulder stops. Any monster hit would compare size to the remaining movement of boulder. If boulder movement is smaller, then they should collide, and boulder stops. Collision would make least damage. If the movement and size are the same, the boulder crushes the victim and stops there. This does more damage. If the movement is bigger the the creature size, the boulder crushes the victim, and continues on, with reduces movement (reducedd by creature size). Running the boulder down a slope would cause it to gain movement. Maybe we need a way to turn it too, but I would be happy with this for starters. Since the system has no friction, we could have a nice swinging pendulum with upramps on both ends, allowing the boulder to move in a u shaped path back and forth, but that is a curiosity, unless you wish to make an obstacle course for invaders.

If you are a goblin, you know you joined the wrong siege when the grates come down and bridge raises behind you, trapping you inside.

1) Put a space between that and can.
2)Pressure, not preshure

Or just shot a angry berserk dwarf you had caged for a while at the enemy that steps on the plate.

Or reverse the whole thing - shot a enemy that steps on the trap into your dwarfs/deadpit/magma/wall/other enemys/sharp objects
