Indicate missing value numbers on trade screen
« on: April 07, 2009, 02:03:45 pm »

In my very first game of Dwarf Fortress, I found the trade screen confusing.  My broker did not have the "Appraisal" skill, so the value of each item was blank.  The screen showed the weight number for each item, and I thought that these were the item values.

I suggest that, when the broker has no Appraisal skill, the game should display "???$" as the value of each item, instead of leaving the value blank.  This is a small change that would make the interface clearer.

If there's spare room at the top of the screen, the game could also display a message like "Your broker needs more Appraisal experience to know the values of items."

I made the same mistake on my first fortress (man, I thought, granite is expensive), and it's a relatively minor fix so I'm going to have to second this. It takes about 15 seconds on the wiki to figure out what's going wrong, but it shouldn't be confusing in the first place.
