I wish it was, but I do have a 15zlevel pit with nothing but elf bones at the bottom.

Mandrills.
 Thousands of them.
You had the closest answer.

I hope that this image works...

Its a few hundred Camels, hippoes, cats, dogs, and giant cats of the desert.

I've got pretty much the entire map trapped, I'm going to eventually build a set of butcher shops, then drop some of my captured goblins in that pit.

Urist Austin, Axedwarf.  A dwarf barely alive.  Gentledwarves, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic dwarf. Urist Austin will be that dwarf. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

Give every single dwarf his own private zoo. Such awesomeness is mandatory.
Plus WAR HIPPOS. Hungry Hungry WAR HIPPOS.

Yes, my experience with hippoes in previous forteress is akin to boatmurdered with Elephants. One of them pulled its way (through a set of both a verticle grate and verticle bars) into my fortress, and killed over half my dwarves. Even my champion wrestlers were taken down by it... Training war hippoes would be epic.

Then you force invaders to take long, winding causeways through an area you channel out and subsequently flood. The joy of seeing gobbos getting pulled into the foaming red water by fifty named Hippos would be one like no other.

Arise, lake tyrant, and take your fill.

So is the miner in the pit a kind of prisoner or something? If not.. what's keeping the animals?

I don't even want to think about the lag you would get if you just let them all go at the same time...

On the Wall is a Masterfully engraved carving of Urist McHardcastle and Goblins. Urist McHardcastle is surrounded by the Goblins. The Golbins are stamping on Urist McHardcastle. Urist McHardcaste is laughing at the Goblins. The carving related to the prolonged and bloody death of Urist McHardcastle in the Fall of 1659, the Winter of 1659, and the Spring of 1660. On the engraving is an image of Cheese.

The lag would be bad enough that we would start to see the effects in real life. Because the earth would be moving at a slower framerate than the sun, we would fall out of orbit and into the fiery embrace of our parent star.

Repent, sinners, for the end is nigh.

It may not be perpetually burning elves...but I bet with a little patience and Dwarven ingenuity we can solve that.

That's the spirit!

What is the pit? Control. The pit is a dwarf-dug prison built to turn a creature into this. *Holds up a -Cat Tallow Roast-*
The fortress is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy.

What is with the other pit?

Easy. Its the Pit of Debauchery. Given all the clothes on the ground and the creepy smiling Dwarf faces.
