Is your butcher shop in a place that is technically "above ground"? By default dorfs won't hall refuse that is considered "outside". If you go to [ o]rders -> [r]efuse there's an option to toggle this behavior so they'll haul refuse from outdoors, but this means they may end up running around the entire map picking up random vermin that dies and other useless things.

Cat bones? Lying around?

I make bolts out of all mine. I imagine the process is quite simple.

1. Load cat bone into crossbow.
2. Fire at target.
3. Laugh.
4. Drink.
5. Repeat until you're out of bones.

I've been devising a catfort.

I started with 30 cats, and i butcher 20 for food, bolts, bows, armor, and whatever else, and i brew drink.

I have a production line which completely converts a cat from useless to useful in 5 easy steps:

Butcher,
Cook,
Tan,
Leatherwork,
Carve into bows + bolts

And if you're not using the tallow for food, soap it and build with it.

A cat based fortress!

Make sure you lay out the soap blocks in the shape of a cat face. Then put your cats, butcher shops, etc... inside.

Urist Austin, Axedwarf.  A dwarf barely alive.  Gentledwarves, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic dwarf. Urist Austin will be that dwarf. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

Seconded. Cat fortress must be shaped like cat.

I actually wrote up a document a while ago regarding using cats as the main source of food and wealth in a fort. I had planned out a starting build, but I never actually tested it in game to see if it was viable. Maybe this could be an interesting challenge for people?
Everything here is verbatim from the document, except for notes I made in parentheses.

I figure a cat-fed fortress, that only (mainly) uses kitten resources would be possible, but problematic, since the behaviour of cats to pick their owners and giving the player almost no control over that. I mean, you can't kill EVERY dwarf that got adopted, or can you?

nevertheless, awesome idea.

1. I think it's specific dwarves that having a liking for cats so if you can stand to off them the rest might not adopt... maybe.

2. I believe if you go into the raws and take out the vermin hunter tag from cats they'll stop adopting themselves to your fortress members.

3. There are some utilities that let you deal with adopted cats.

4. I think the best option for un-adoption is a tightly sealed door in front of a retractable floor. Plenty of cat bones to be got that way and you could just forbid the door when you don't want to cull the pet population.
