Maybe Elves arn't all bad
« on: April 05, 2009, 11:52:24 pm »

So, my new fort gets its regular spring Elf caravan.

Scrolling through the list of stuff they brought, I find a (Giant Jaguar Cage) a (Jaguar Cage) a (Black Bear Cage) and a (Willow Cage (Raccoon inside)).

Holy crap!

Next Elf caravan (I killed this one by locking them inside the depot until their donkeys and camels went nuts and killed everything they could reach (Freakin Thunderdome!)) brings 2 I repeat TWO (Alligator Cages) and another (Black Bear Cage) in addition to a (Jaguar Cage).  Sadly the rampaging camel and donkey killed the Jaguar.

So, could Elves be trying to redeem themselves?

It is thanks to the elves I have murdered over the years that I have my fortress entrance hall lined with 5 jaguars on one side, 5 cougars on the other, with a breeding pair of bears tied up outside.

It is thanks to my own dwarven ingenuity that I have an overly complicated mechanism by which intruders (or sleepy dwarves) in a certain section of my entrance hall are dropped 4 z-levels into a dark disgusting refuse cave to be devoured by my feral giant cave spider.

Also, the elves were the first to be tossed into the spider pit.

The exotic animals they bring are their only saving grace, and the wood they very rarely bring in wood-starved maps.

Also, sunshine.

Just kill the elves and take their animals. Its always most fun that way.

Urist Austin, Axedwarf.  A dwarf barely alive.  Gentledwarves, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic dwarf. Urist Austin will be that dwarf. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

Sunshine and animals are the only real good things they bring. Just burn all the extra cloth!

The exotic animals they bring are their only saving grace, and the wood they very rarely bring in wood-starved maps.

The wood is based in part on how much wood you have stockpiled. If your wood reserves are almost empty then 95% of the items they bring will be wood logs.

(Conversely, this means if you want to get any exotic animals you have to make sure you have plenty of wood stockpiled or they'll bring you wood instead.)

Whoa, really? Is that how it works? The elves actually bring wood to you if you don't have any?

How incredibly decent of them.

Yeah. I'm usually out of logs (barring a single-digit reserve in case of moods) after a couple of years so the elves bring pretty much nothing else from that point on. The dwarf caravan acts the same way if you no longer have a liaison, such as after the King/Queen arrives; my last fort became a Mountainhome and started getting fall caravans with 400+ logs. I don't know if the same thing happens if the liaison simply dies. It's possible if you don't set any trade priorities for the human/dwarven caravans that they might also fill the wagons accordingly but I'm not sure since I typically have other things I want anyhow.

The Elves are real hippocrites. Theysay, don't harm the animals and dont cutdown trees. So what do they do, sell you animals and trees.

I've got a nice exotic zoo, thanks to the elves..

They even brought me a Giant Eagle..
Waiting for a mate for it, I'm really curious if and how they breed

Now you should build a trap that drops black bear cubs on intruders.

Make that burning black bear cubs for extra points.
