Fisherdwarf gives birth to a baby girl - baby girl drowns
« on: April 05, 2009, 06:58:59 pm »

HONESTLY.

I don't even know how this happened. I had a canal and was placing some grates on it for security reasons. The fisherdwarf is there and she's trying to fish or she's installing grates. I don't know which. Suddenly she has a child and the child falls into the canal and drowns.

Was it because of all the commotion there? An animal pushed her? I don't know but no one even seems to mind.  They're all just happy they had a sibling/daughter recently. So what if it only lived for three seconds?

an baby thats not carried by the mother will jump off a cliff or into a river because it thinks the mother is dead and is trying to commit suicide.

Really?

On a semi-related note, I had a miner die in a magma moat because he somehow fell in while channelling out the stairs that were used to get into the moat in the first place. The fall broke his ankle and he couldn't get away in time for me to build a way out.

That might explain why the baby was found an tile into the canal and not immediately next to the edge. Damn ... suicidal... babies ...

actually i think it is more on the lines of the baby just popping out of the mother on a tile adjacent to her which in this case happened to be water

I had a bridge over a chasm once. A cheese maker gave birth.

Urist McBaby, baby, has fallen into a deep chasm!

It's probably for the better. He would've inherited useless Cheese Maker genes.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

Dwarves are hardy creatures. Even during labor they are able to go about their business as if the child wasn't there.

While humans can be bed-ridden for what can possibly be days.

Urist Austin, Axedwarf.  A dwarf barely alive.  Gentledwarves, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic dwarf. Urist Austin will be that dwarf. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

THAT explains why, when I accidentally cross-tunneled into the brook and flooded a side portion of my fort (centered around a big reservoir which was powering water traps), I lost like four babies-I guess the flood made their mothers drop them and they just... jumped in.

Woopy-doo.

If a dwarf baby is not born with a beard the elders will throw him to the carps to keep the dwarf people bearded and strong.
