Ok sorry for my horrible reply, I just don't think it is needed right now. There are so many features this game could include, imagine we are very very far from 1.0...
It's a very good idea, but should be expanded to another things like the Trojan Horse, we should be able to build small "tanks" (or horses in the case). Everything should be possible.

This is the suggestions sub-forum.  Not the Things We Need Right Now sub-forum.  I don't think anyone who has posted on this thread has said anything suggesting that this be implemented immediately.

@ Tormy:  Doesn't mean there shouldn't be some way to get one or two automatons.

What's up with all the high-tech suggestions anyway? It'd just turn into some generic over-the-top fantasy dwarf race if these were put in. They aren't supposed to have better technology than we do, in my opinion.

Automaton: An automaton (plural: automata or automatons) is a self-operating machine. The word is sometimes used to describe a robot, more specifically an autonomous robot. For computer controlled self-operating machinery see Automation. (from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automaton )

Golem: In Jewish folklore, a golem (גולם, sometimes, as in Yiddish, pronounced goilem) is an animate being created entirely from inanimate matter. In modern Hebrew the word golem literally means "cocoon", but can also mean "fool", "silly", or even "stupid". The name appears to derive from the word gelem (גלם), which means "raw material".[citation needed] Alternatively some sources[which?] indicate it is a corruption of the Hebrew go′al 'enu (גואלנו) our redeemer or our avenger, this version is supported by the 16th century Prague ghetto stories (see below). (again, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golem)

Basically, Golems seem to be animated by magic, Automatons by technology. I would go for automatons :)

Why not both? They could have their own pros and cons!

They are supposed to produce artifacts, though.

The Dwarf Fortress world is supposed to be a world of strange wonders.  A few mechanical men forged by a god or a mad possessed dwarf would fit in fine.

Massive mass-produced armies of mechanical men made in huge factory-citadels probably wouldn't, because then they wouldn't really be wonders.

It would probably work best (modding wise) if they were just mechanical versions of creatures in the raws.  It could be restricted to certain creatures with a tag similar to [UNDEAD_CANDIDATE].

So, if dwarves could build automatons (Which we can't do) they should also be able to build machine guns, and tanks, and bombers, and nukes, and lasers, and lightsabers and......

Much as I love robots, especially the old steampunk kind, I just really can't see them in a world like DF.  I mean traps have been around for milenia, and screw pumps have likewise been around for ages, as have windmills and waterwheels.  Going from 'dwarves have screw pumps' to 'dwarves have tech vastly more sophisticated then we do in 2009' is a massive jump.

If magic becomes a large part of the game though, I can imagine golems existing.  Would make for an awesome thing to trade for.

I kind of liked the golems the dwarves had in the Secret of Mana series.  They were very earthy, and could go berserk and stuff.

Mind, that series was high, HIGH fantasy, included the occasional aliens, and by the end of SoM you've waded through the high-tech space fortress or whatever.

As I already pointed out, automata have a long history in myth and legend.

They're the sort of thing that gods produce, or that legendary craftsmen forge in a fit of divinely-inspired genius, not things you mass-produce.  But they belong there just as much as dragons and titans, or enchanted swords and magic carpets.

A) What about collosi?

B) If we have golemns, they should be able to be made out of any, and I mean ANY material.

Giant Spider Silk Sock Golemn hits for 9 damage. It is mangled!

A SOCK isn't a material though. It is an object. You seriously suggest one should be able to build golems out of water, cats, magma, smoke, fire, stills, wood, goblin leather, earrings, bone, sand, glass .. everything?
